Every Hugh Jackman Wolverine Costume, Ranked Worst To Best

Hugh Jackman has been the embodiment of Wolverine since the character first appeared in live-action back in 2000, but some Logan looks have been better than others. Wolverine has one of the most distinctive comic book looks of any comic book character, with a mask with large wings, vibrant, colorful costumes, and large metal claws protruding from his hands.

In addition, the comic book version is traditionally on the shorter side, with wild shaggy hair, full sideburns, and an eternal grimace. And while some of these details were preserved with the casting of Hugh Jackman, there is no denying Jackman’s look has usually been distinct and different from the source material.

Despite this, Jackman managed to endear himself and claim the role so completely that, despite plenty of other recastings across the X-Men franchise, he has been the only actor to lay claim to Wolverine, and one that Marvel Studios has toyed with keeping around for even longer. Either way, over 26 years of being Wolverine on the big screen, Jackman has had the chance to explore a variety of different looks for the character.

X-Men: Apocalypse: Weapon X

In X-Men: Apocalypse, Jackman delivered a cameo wherein his origin story is revisited. Similar to what appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Logan was being experimented on in a lab. However, the reason this iteration of that appearance makes the list is that it’s a near-identical replica of the comic book story that sees Logan imbued with his Adamantium skeleton.

While the accuracy is admirable, it is still a pair of shorts, some wires, and a headset. It’s not the usual Wolverine fighting look, and it barely gets onto the list as a “suit.” It’s cool, it’s a fun nod to the comics, but there are many better suits worn by Jackman’s Wolverine throughout his career.

Deadpool & Wolverine: OId Man Logan

Deadpool & Wolverine was a wish-fulfillment overload as the just over two-hour movie brought the pages of comics to life by bringing an iconic duo together. And on top of the Deadpool and Wolverine crossover, there was also a sequence of moments that saw Hugh Jackman don iconic outfits worn by Wolverine throughout the history of his time in comics.

Among them is the classic Old Man Logan look. Now, this is a fine effort, and it definitely works as an homage to the comic book arc by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, but beyond the pages of the comics, it’s a little plain. It doesn’t really utilize Hugh Jackman’s look, and considering another iteration of this storyline from the 2017 movie, this version feels underwhelming.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Patch

However, one comic book adaptation that certainly didn’t underwhelm was the Patch costume worn in the same Deadpool & Wolverine sequence. Patch was an alias that Logan took on while on the island of Madripoor. With his true identity hidden, Patch became well known on the island.

This suit is simple, it’s stylish, and it works remarkably well for Jackman’s Wolverine. However, it also falls prey to being highly simplistic. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but considering how exciting and attention-grabbing many of the other suits on this list are, it falls behind in the lower half of the rankings.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Age of Apocalypse

Now, talking about exciting and attention-grabbing, the Age of Apocalypse suit from Deadpool & Wolverine is a perfect example of just how imaginative and creative the writers for Wolverine have gotten over the years. Based on an iconic outfit that sees the character in a timeline ruled by Apocalypse, where Logan is a leading member of the resistance.

This iteration also has one hand, a distinct blue and red suit, and longer shaggy hair that evokes a sense of 1980s style. It’s an awesome look, and it breaks away from the tradition in such a fun way that it definitely deserves a spot on this list.

X-Men

The first appearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine came in 2000 during Bryan Singer’s X-Men. Initially, Logan is reluctant to join a team of mutants, but he finds a community that welcomes him despite his shortcomings, and when it comes time to fight for his allies, Wolverine steps up.

Now, the leather suits from this trilogy are often criticized for how much they move away from the stylized and colorful comic book suits, but there are some subtle nods that make it a worthy live-action adaptation. For instance, the yellow lining, the triangle shapes along the ribs, and the X-Men logos. All things considered, it’s not a bad look, and it effectively took these characters out of the comics and into live-action.

Further up the list, we saw the Old Man Logan costume as seen in Deadpool & Wolverine, and while that was an accurate representation of the comics, Logan’s more sleek and modern adaptation clearly fits Hugh Jackman’s version of the character so much better.

The use of a simple black suit, and the subtle inclusion of grey hair to imply that this timeless character is beginning to have his age catch up to him does a tremendous job in exploring the story and making this one of the most effective looks for the character in his entire run.

X-Men 2

Moving on to X-Men 2, or X-2, Wolverine gets a slight update to his suit with the new detail of a yellow X across his chest, which is also included on many of his teammates’ suits. This small adjustment makes a huge difference, creating a more unified team look and capturing more of the comic book styling by making a large statement with the iconic letter printed on his chest.

It is still mostly an all-leather black suit, but the yellow detailing does a lot to transform this look and make it a very effective modern adaptation of the classic Wolverine look.

X-Men: The Last Stand

X-Men: The Last Stand also includes a very similar version of the suit from X-2, but it is a sleeker fit, with more trim and embellishing details that ultimately take this version of the suit to the next level.

Sure, it isn’t groundbreaking or highly innovative, but they found a style that worked, and they went back to refine it and make it even better. As a result, it definitely beats out the previous suit, and it manages to slide into sixth place.

X-Men: Days of Future Past: Lost Future Suit

X-Men: Days of Future Past had the two versions of X-Men collide in spectacular fashion, with Wolverine serving as a pivotal central figure. So, of course, Jackman needed to get a new suit and revisit the character for yet another outing.

This suit is highly tactical, with a simplified style from the earlier leather suits, and, for the first time in live-action, muted yellow and blue sleeves that finally paid tribute to the comic book origins of the character. It’s not perfect, but it definitely comes out on top when it comes to the Fox official super suits.

As much as all of the earlier suits are wonderful homages and tributes to the comics, there is one distinctive style that sets Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine portrayal apart from almost anything else: the iconic white tank top look. This is perhaps Jackman’s most frequent costume while portraying Wolverine, with numerous films implementing this look.

It may not be that eye-catching for the pages of the comics, but when it comes to film, it almost doesn’t get better than this. Jackman gets to show off his muscles, and it feels like a perfect fit for the rugged, rough, and ready character that is Wolverine.
