Fire crews knocked down a fire in South Gate at a tire-recycling facility that sent plumes of thick black smoke billowing into the air Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters had struggled to contain the large industrial fire.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department said in a post on X that it responded at 2:40 p.m. to a report of a fire at the facility in the 11800 block of Industrial Avenue. Upon arrival, crews took a defensive position.

First responders from the county Fire Department and the South Gate Police Department were at the scene.
The surrounding community was temporarily under a shelter-in-place order as firefighters battled the flames, according to county Supervisor Janice Hahn, who urged people in a post on X to stay indoors with their pets and keep the doors and windows closed.
There was no word on what sparked the blaze or whether there were people in the facility at the time the fire started.
