As the franchise’s first theatrical release in seven years, The Mandalorian and Grogu marks a definitive new era for Star Wars – but was it worth the wait?
Members of the film press who attended the world premiere and early screenings for The Mandalorian and Grogu appear divided on the matter, as the first reactions to Din Djarin and Din Grogu’s big-screen debut are highly polarizing. Much like fans and influencers (who previewed the first 25 minutes), critics and industry professionals are split on whether the galactic romp is an “exciting summer blockbuster” or a “not very good season of TV.” The movie continues the storyline of the Disney+ series, serving as the next chapter after the third season, with the titular two enlisted to protect the galaxy from the last remnants of the Fallen Empire. While some viewers found it to be a thrilling adventure, others dismissed it as a weak cinematic entry.
The Mandalorian and Grogu director Jon Favreau hoped to give the Star Wars franchise a new lease of life by making a movie out of the Mandalorian’s next mission, and for some people, it is a real triumph in that regard. Fandango critic @ErikDavis called it “a thrilling adventure full of big fights, gnarly creatures and plenty of adorable Grogu moments,” noting that “it’s less about the lore and more a fun, freaky romp across the galaxy.” Ludwig Göransson’s score and Martin Scorsese’s cameo also got a shoutout in the write-up, which came with a word of advice for audiences: “Treat it like a pulpy Saturday matinee ride, and you’ll have a blast.”
