‘The Odyssey’ Trailer Unleashes Christopher Nolan’s Action Fantasy Epic

Academy Award winner Christopher Nolan has unleashed a stunning new trailer for The Odyssey, with the director bringing Homer’s seminal Greek action fantasy epic to life like only he can.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026. The new footage offers far more footage than any previous trailers and teasers as it teases the titular Odysseus’ journey from king and warrior to a lost wanderer in search of where he came from and who he is.

As well as revealing more of Odysseus’ journey, the footage also offers first glimpses at some of the key players in this epic tale, including Tom Holland as Odysseus’s son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Odysseus’s wife Penelope, Charlize Theron as the nymph and Odysseus’ captor, Calypso, as well as Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page.

The new trailer also finally unleashes our first look at one of the mythical elements of The Odyssey, the Cyclops, who, in the original story, traps Odysseus and his men in a cave and begins to feast on them. The Odyssey is Nolan’s first foray into the truly fantastical, and while the filmmaker has previously explained how he plans to bring the likes of the Cyclops and the Sirens to life “in a sort of real-world way,” this is the first hint we’ve had at what exactly that means.

And, terrifyingly, it does look about as real as a giant cyclops can. The creature stands at 30 feet tall, holding one of Odysseus’ men as if he were but a snack. Appearing and moving like a hulking human being, but possessing the unmistakable single eye at the center of his face, the Cyclops eerily stands somewhere between the real-world and a fantasy one, with the sequence sure to be a major highlight.

Following a similar path as its ancient source material, The Odyssey centers on Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he embarks on a perilous journey to return home after the Trojan War. Led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, you’ll need to take a big breath to get through the rest of the A-list names in the huge ensemble cast. And it’s a cast that will have you seeing stars.

The Odyssey will feature an epic cast to match its epic ambitions that includes Tom Holland (Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Brand New Day), Anne Hathaway (Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises), Charlize Theron (Monster, Mad Max: Fury Road), Benny Safdie (Good Time, Oppenheimer), Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, A Quiet Place: Day One), Robert Pattinson (The Batman, Mickey 17), Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Elliot Page (Inception), Mia Goth (Pearl, Frankenstein), Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton), Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Cosmo Jarvis (Shōgun), Himesh Patel (Tenet), Samantha Morton (Minority Report), John Leguizamo (Encanto), Will Yun Lee (The Wolverine), Logan Marshall-Green (Upgrade), James Remar (Oppenheimer), and, somehow, more.
