The UK’s top 10 best-connected cities have been named, and there are some surprising entries on the list. New research by Karas Plating has revealed the cities and towns with the best public transport, examining 36 locations through a weighted scoring system.

The study evaluated three core pillars: transport connectivity (40%), international connectivity (30%), and digital and economic connectivity (30%). Metrics included bus and rail stops per capita, airport accessibility and journey times, European flight links, broadband speeds, 5G coverage, coworking space availability, and affordability through cost of living versus income.

In what may come as a surprise to some, Edinburgh tops the rankings, with Glasgow claiming second position.

Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, excels across numerous measures, securing first place for bus stops (26.61 per 10,000 people), bike commuters at 10%, and connections to other major cities. It also enjoys substantial international access and remarkable digital infrastructure, with download speeds of 223.68 Mbps and 99.4% 5G coverage.

In a major win for Scotland, another Scottish city has taken a top spot, with Glasgow coming second in the rankings. Glasgow reflects much of this strength, leading in bus connectivity with 31.92 stops per 10,000 people and claiming the fastest airport access in the study at merely 20 minutes, coupled with impressive broadband speeds of 221.56 Mbps.

Technically a large town and not a city — often touted as England’s ‘largest’ town — Reading places third on the list, distinguished by its remarkable international connectivity despite the absence of its own airport. It takes first place for European destinations per capita (10.63) and cost of living versus income (25.00), rendering it both globally connected and comparatively affordable.

London has secured fourth spot in the rankings, with the UK’s capital city excelling in infrastructure scale, including the highest metro density (0.306 stops per 10,000 people), the greatest number of links to other cities (9), and complete 5G coverage. Nevertheless, its elevated cost of living ratio (58.93) does marginally affect its overall standing.

Bristol, in fifth position, strikes a balance between robust transport links and digital accessibility. It places second for coworking spaces (1.95 per 10,000 people) and enjoys complete 5G coverage, while also maintaining solid international connectivity.

Chester arrives sixth, propelled largely by outstanding transport density, including 138.19 bus stops per 10,000 people and the second-highest rail stop availability. Its strong European connectivity (7.91 destinations per capita) additionally elevates its ranking.

Southampton claims seventh place, providing one of the quickest airport connections at just 18 minutes and strong affordability, ranking second for cost of living versus income (40.45).

Welsh capital Cardiff takes eighth place, as Wales’ largest city boasts a high bus stop density of 34.33 per 10,000 people, complete 5G coverage, and the strongest affordability score in the research (36.64), cementing its position as one of the most well-rounded cities in the rankings.

Worcester claims ninth spot, primarily due to its outstanding bus infrastructure, which leads the entire study with 230.50 stops per 10,000 people, complemented by reliable broadband speeds of 151.74 Mbps and full 5G coverage.

Completing the top 10 is another large town, Blackpool, which capitalises on robust transport connections, including a notable metro presence of 1.631 stops per 10,000 people, and a low cost of living ratio of 25.00, though the seaside town’s comparatively sluggish broadband speeds of 100.60 Mbps prove something of a drawback.
