After strutting its way to a respectable $10 million haul during Thursday night previews, the buzzy Devil Wears Prada 2 is on track for a $75–80 million opening weekend (via Deadline). Released 20 years after the original hit, the high-fashion-world sequel is not only drawing much-needed patrons back to movie theaters. It has also received glowing reviews, already securing a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 77% approval. Of course, with such success, talk of a sequel is imminent.
Although nothing is definitive at this time, the cast, led by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt, has already expressed their interest in returning to Runway Magazine in a potential Devil Wears Prada 3. Between the enthusiasm of the actors and director David Frankel, potential new storylines to explore, and the box-office performance of part 2, which will inform the fate of a potential threequel, here’s everything to know about the possibility of The Devil Wears Prada 3.
Confirmation on ‘The Devil Wears Prada 3’
Released in theaters on May 1, 2026, The Devil Wears Prada 2 comes 20 years after the endearing original captured the world’s adoration. In the sequel, Andy Sachs (Hathaway) returns to Runway magazine after 20 years away to help her former boss, Miranda Priestly (Streep), navigate a PR mess. Meanwhile, Miranda’s first former assistant, Emily Charlton (Blunt), has become a formidable rival as a top executive at Dior. With print media dying, Miranda’s personal and professional standing takes a severe hit, prompting a bold strategic shake-up.
On track to gross between $75 and $80 million during its opening theatrical weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is on pace to become another critical and commercial hit for 20th Century Fox. With such success, it’s only natural to consider another sequel. However, it’s worth noting that the cost of The Devil Wears Prada 2 far exceeds the original, with a reported budget of $100 million compared to the first film’s $35–41 million. The original grossed $327 million worldwide, with the sequel just now starting to recoup its expenses.
Therefore, The Devil Wears Prada 3 has not been confirmed at this time. As Anne Hathaway shrewdly told People about the prospect of a third film:
“I hope so, I feel like there’s more road to explore. But, we’ll probably have a better idea of that [when the film comes out].”
Who Will Star in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 3’?
While a sequel has yet to be confirmed, the main characters are expected to return for The Devil Wears Prada 3 if greenlit. In addition to Miranda Priestly (Streep), Andy Sachs (Hathaway), and Emily Charlton (Blunt), Stanley Tucci has expressed interest in reprising his role of Nigel Kipling, Runway‘s fashion director and Miranda’s closest confidant. When asked about making a third franchise entry, Streep quipped, “I hope they don’t wait 20 years!“
Supporting the sentiment, Tucci chimed in: “I don’t think we can do it in another 20 years. We have to do it sooner than that, because I’ll be dead. [Maybe] if they exhume us.” Another 20 years may be too long for Streep and Tucci, but Blunt joked about the importance of allowing time to elapse between sequels, stating:
“We believe in letting a lot of time sizzle between these movies,” adding that a third entry “could be fun” provided that she and Tucci (her real-life brother-in-law) had “more to do together” onscreen the next time out. Blunt notes, “We love what we got to do, but we didn’t get enough to do together,” adding that she “wanted a little more to chew on together” in Part 2.
What Will ‘The Devil Wears Prada 3’ Be About?
Without confirmation on a third franchise installment, it’s impossible to know what The Devil Wears Prada 3 will be about. However, that isn’t stopping some of the cast members from pitching their own potential storylines for the sequel. Three new additions to Prada 2 include Simone Ashley, who plays Miranda’s first current assistant, Amari; Caleb Hearon, who plays Miranda’s second assistant, Charlie; and Helen J. Shin, who plays Andy’s assistant, Jin.
Speaking with ScreenRant about their interest in returning for a third film, the trio joked about the improbability of taking another 20 years to make a sequel, with Ashley firmly declaring, “It’s not going to take 20 years. It’s Not!” As for their ideas about their characters moving forward, the trio entertained potential subplots for Prada 3, with Hearon adding:
“I don’t know, but I hope it’s the three of us doing something together. I hope we run Runway or something together. It’d be fun.”
Expressing her joyous gratitude for working on Prada 2 and enthusiasm for a sequel, Shen beamed:
“I’ve been having such a great time doing all of this with you guys. All I want to do is hang out on set. So, wherever we are, I’ll be there.”
When Will ‘The Devil Wears Prada 3’ Be Released?
With the main and supporting casts interested in making The Devil Wears Prada 3, the sequel seems more inevitable than uncertain. However, the box office performance of Prada 2 will be the ultimate determinant. One thing is certain: there’s no way it will take another 20 years to make a third franchise entry. Therefore, while it’s hard to know when a third film might be released, director David Frankel gets the last word on the matter, telling People:
“There’s a life for the characters beyond this story. Let’s see what happens. It’s show business. It’s anybody’s guess. We said no 20 years ago, and here we are,” Frankel admits. “I don’t want to say yes now. They are very rich characters, they’re amazing actors, there’s great screenwriting, so I could imagine that these characters might live on.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is currently playing in theaters.
