Confirmed ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Character Comeback Creates Season 3 Uncertainty

I remember the day it was announced that Daredevil: Born Again would be a direct continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil series, rather than the much harder reboot than was initially planned. I was elated, and also confused about why the latter was ever even considered. Leaving the lore from the original series (and the Defenders Saga in general) intact immediately benefited Born Again due to the narrative and emotional depth that audiences were able to just stroll into.

While Born Again has introduced some great new characters, the returning figures have been one of the best elements of the show so far. Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye has been a great recurring villain throughout Born Again despite only making his debut in the final season of Daredevil. While I’m pretty much ready to move on from Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, I also will never complain about having him as part of the story, either. Born Again Season 3 isn’t slowing down with its penchant for bringing back members of the Netflix cast to reprise their roles in the Disney+ era. A pivotal figure from Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) past is now confirmed to resurface, and her comeback suggests a notable uncertainty when it comes to the show’s trajectory.

Elektra’s Return Complicates Who Could Take Over as Daredevil While Matt Is In Jail

Matt Murdock has been to jail twice in the comics, so the Born Again Season 2 finale wasn’t anything new for fans of the source material. The circumstances of his incarceration are different in the show, but the general scenario is far from unprecedented. However, what’s particularly interesting is that Season 3’s decision to bring back Finn Jones as Danny “Iron Fist” Rand had me convinced that one of the comics’ Matt-goes-to-jail twists was being prioritized by Born Again. 2006’s “Devil in Cell Block D” storyline saw Iron Fist don the suit and masquerade as Daredevil. I figured this would be replicated in Season 3, sowing the seeds of doubt about Matt’s confession that he’s the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.

Marvel Comics

The recent reveal that Elodie Yung is now also coming back as Elektra has disrupted that theory. 2019’s “Know Fear” comic book run also sees Matt go to jail, but as Daredevil. In other words, he wears a mask in prison, and his secret identity is legally permitted to stay a secret. With New York a vigilante short, Elektra takes up Matt’s Daredevil duties. This is now an equally valid option for how Season 3 will continue the story. Of course, it could be that Born Again will explore neither avenue. The timing of both characters returning at the same time seems very convenient, though. I think it’s safe to say that either Iron Fist or Elektra will inherit Matt’s responsibilities; it just remains to be seen who. Could it even be both of them?

Wait, Didn’t Elektra Die in ‘Daredevil’?

Yes, she did. In fact, she also died in The Defenders. After making a seemingly uncharacteristic sacrifice by throwing herself in front of Matt to save his life from a lethal blow by Nobu (Peter Shinkoda) in Daredevil, the Hand resurrected her in The Defenders as she fulfilled her destiny as the Black Sky, a living weapon. Then she appeared to meet her end when the entire Midland Circle building collapsed on her. Matt was with her, though, and he also managed to survive. It’s not a crazy thought that Elektra would also evade death – again. I think it’s probably that simple. No mysticism required this time.

While it could be seen as a little too serendipitous that Elektra is returning now, I honestly couldn’t care less. I know she’s a somewhat divisive character among the fandom, but I’m on the pro-Elektra side of the debate. Her history as a former love interest of Matt, as well as a powerful ally and then a lethal villain, makes her a joyfully complex character. I love how she brings the worst out of Matt by simply being around him, and that he’s drawn to her darkest impulses without really knowing why. I can’t wait to see how Daredevil: Born Again uses her in Season 3.
