DC Studios is fast approaching the worldwide release of its second theatrical release in the new DC Universe, Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Noguiera. The movie uses Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow run from DC Comics for its story, pitting the titular heroine on an intergalactic journey in which she helps protect a young girl and goes on her own quest for revenge. Bridging the gap between 2025’s Superman and 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, this story will give Milly Alcock her first full appearance as Kara Zor-El after making a cameo at the end of Superman.
Also introduced in this movie is Jason Momoa’s Lobo, following his seven years playing Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (largely overseen by Zack Snyder). Momoa has long called Lobo a dream comic book movie role, having wanted to embody the Czarnian bounty hunter from DC Comics since before he even took on the role of Arthur Curry. However, while anticipation is building for the general public to see Momoa in action, some are already comparing him to another version of Lobo from the last few years.
Before Jason Momoa’s DCU debut as Lobo, the role was previously played by Emmet J. Scanlan in four episodes of Krypton Season 2 in 2019. Here, he is introduced as a major antagonist hired to track down Adam Strange and Seg-El, and he becomes deeply entangled in the cosmic chaos due to his connection to Brainiac and the House of El. As Supergirl gets its first reviews from critics, fans are already comparing the two versions of the antihero.
X user @NebsGoodTakes called Scanlan “so passionate about Lobo” and felt he gave “such a good performance” before noting that he feels “insulted on his behalf” watching Momoa in the Supergirl trailers. @DecSteele added to that commentary, saying he “[hates] the accent so much” from Momoa and “loved the actor” from Krypton “using his Irish accent,” saying it was a perfect fit for the character. Additionally, while @AkodoKeitaro did not think Lobo was good in Krypton, he praised the show for the fact that “the makeup was 100% Lobo.”
Looking ahead to Supergirl‘s release in theaters, critics’ reactions to Lobo have been largely positive after early screenings, with many saying Momoa fits the role seamlessly. Footage of his portrayal of Lobo has already teased one of the wildest new characters in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, setting him up as an immortal being with a “god complex” who wiped out his entire planet. Now, the question will be whether his return to the DC Universe will garner the reaction many hope to see and what his future with the franchise holds.
Supergirl will debut in theaters on Jul. 26, 2026.
