As is the case with many legacy sequels, new audiences and fans of the franchise may want to explore the series’ history before diving into Grand Theft Auto 6. Plus, anyone who hasn’t yet indulged in GTA 5’s companion experience Grand Theft Auto Online companion may choose to do so in the months preceding GTA 6’s release date, which now appears to be more concrete and unwavering than ever.
However, while Grand Theft Auto 5’s Story Mode (the actual, main game, distinct from Grand Theft Auto Online) was previously available on a PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription, it no longer is. Fortunately, in a brand-new update, there is one subscription service where Grand Theft Auto 5’s Story Mode is now available, meaning that fans will no longer need to purchase it separately in order to play it.
Rockstar recently announced that Grand Theft Auto 5’s Story Mode has arrived on the GTA+ Games Library in a somewhat unceremonious and spontaneous update. As per the official Rockstar website:
“Experience the interwoven criminal saga of a young street hustler, a retired bank robber, and a terrifying psychopath with Grand Theft Auto V’s action-packed, blockbuster Story Mode — now included in the GTA+ Games Library, along with access to GTA Online.”
Moreover, applicable platform versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 can “migrate Story Mode and Online progress to the latest versions, and enjoy features like Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades, Career Progress rewards, and more.”
The complete Story Mode/Online Grand Theft Auto 5 package being available on the GTA+ Games Library is a no-brainer, and now ensures that GTA+ will be the exclusive subscription service for the fifth mainline Grand Theft Auto game, at least until it eventually makes its way to PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass again. Meanwhile, GTA+ subscribers can also make the most of some exciting perks via the service:

- A new selection of monthly benefits.

It is unknown if Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch day and date on the GTA+ service, just as it is also unclear whether the game will launch with its own iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online. Either way, anyone who has wanted to experience or revisit Grand Theft Auto 5’s Story Mode has another incredible excuse to do so, and the next several months will be thrilling as fans anticipate more Grand Theft Auto 6 trailers and marketing.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
