A UK beach has been hailed as a “magical” location which boasts a perfect day out for families. The “best kept secret” can be found in the North Yorkshire county of Whitby and plays host to a richly historic coastal stop-off. Pirate connections and fossil finds are both part of the experience with the destination, just a short distance from Robin Hood’s Bay.
Boggle Hole has been hailed as a fantastic destination by those who have visited the underrated area, and is perfect for a staycation. Situated just a mile from Robin Hood’s Bay, the area was once used by pirates and smugglers to hide contraband such as gin and tobacco. Now, it serves as a wonderful hostel stop-off with an on-site café.
The Hotel Victoria notes that Boggle Hole had been used by smugglers in the 1800s. The hotel, which opened in 1897, features a timeline of events in the area.
It reads: “Much of the village took part in the trade. Stories say fishing boats doubled as smuggling vessels. Boggle Hole cave supposedly hid contraband.”
One glowing review of the area posted to TripAdvisor noted the “best kept secret” offered a perfect day out with plenty of variety.
The visitor wrote: “Best kept secret of North Yorkshire. If you want unspoilt views with no distractions, this is the coast for you. When the tide’s out you can walk to Robin Hood’s Bay. The coast is Jurassic, so expect to see lots of kids/adults looking for fossils.
“You can spend the whole day in the sea – the water is beautiful. Just check the tide times, so you aren’t disappointed when you turn up. I really can’t extol the virtues of this place. If you want a place to chill with the kids or a stop off on the Cleveland Way, this is the place for you.”
Another traveller who stopped off in Boggle Hole added: “What a delight. We went to find Boggle Hole due to the unusual name. Parked in the free area and walked 300yds down the steep slope.”
A third shared: “We did the walk along the cliff then back to Robin Hood’s Bay along the beach. Stopped for coffee at the YHA cafe and had the most amazing carrot cake. Our four year old was really taken with the story of the Boggle.”
The area could be perfect for a staycation, with Robin Hood’s Bay once named the best stop-off in the country for an at-home holiday.
