Milly Alcock Reveals How ‘Supergirl’ Pays Tribute to Superman Icon

Supergirl will soon be soaring onto screens, as the highly anticipated DCU movie is arriving in theaters on Jun. 26, 2026. The standalone film, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, will mark the titular heroine’s return to the big screen, following her cinematic debut over 40 years ago. The mantle of Supergirl has been reimagined numerous times over the years, resulting in vastly different iterations of the comic book character. Sometimes she is depicted as a hopeful hero, other times a fierce warrior or a rebellious spacefarer. Her wardrobe has undergone a similar evolution, with many variations of her iconic suit seen throughout history – but the latest costume borrows from the past to honor the Superman legacy in an unexpected fashion.

Alcock’s Supergirl suit officially debuted on-screen in James Gunn’s Superman movie as she made a brief cameo alongside David Corenswet. Her full and final look was later unveiled in images and trailers for her forthcoming solo film. The costume, completed with the character’s iconic red cape, has been widely praised online, with critics and fans hailing it as one of the most faithful versions of the outfit to date, perfectly adapting the Woman of Tomorrow aesthetic. However, the actress recently revealed the surprising yet beautiful way that her comic-accurate attire pays tribute to Superman icon Christopher Reeve.

During a recent appearance on the Raiders of the Lost podcast, Alcock revealed that her Supergirl suit harbors a touching connection to Reeve’s classic costume. In a nostalgic nod to DC history, her signature red cape was crafted utilizing roughly 16 meters of the original, surviving fabric from Reeve’s cape that he donned in the 1978 Richard Donner-directed classic Superman. The vintage fabric was woven into Alcock’s garment, seemingly as a tribute to the performance that defined the modern superhero genre on the big screen.

“My cape in this film was remade using material from the original Superman cape,” Alcock revealed. “They found there was, like, 16 meters of that material, so yeah, that’s in the back of my cape now.”

Reeve’s portrayal of the Man of Steel in Superman set the cinematic gold standard for adapting comic book heroes. The late actor starred as the titular hero in four films between 1978 and 1987, before the franchise shifted direction by moving first into television, then later, a cinematic rival that eventually led to the sprawling action-heavy universes that are popular today. Despite these changes – and several big-screen successors – Reeve continues to have a profound impact on the mythos, which makes Supergirl’s tribute a fitting one.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and from a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira – who is scripting three major feature films in Chapter One: Gods and MonstersSupergirl is expected to present a darker, more edgy version of Kara Zor-El compared to past screen iterations. The story shifts away from Earth to follow the hardened hero on an interstellar quest for vengeance and justice after an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home. It is the second film in the revamped DC Universe. After that, the superhero slate will plunge into R-rated body horror territory with Clayface, releasing in theaters on Oct. 3, 2026.
