Netflix’s Classic Pirate Adventure Remake Officially Sets Sail in First Trailer

It’s been quite some time since it was first announced, but Netflix’s upcoming anime series The One Piece has finally debuted its first trailer. The original One Piece anime from Toei Animation started airing in 1999, and has been following along with Eiichiro Oda’s original manga of the same name since. It’s been a long ongoing series, consisting of over 1100 episodes, often creating filler arcs and slower pacing to allow Oda to create new chapters of One Piece that Toei can eventually adapt. Now, production house Wit Studio is taking a crack at the most popular manga of all time.

Following a brief look at the new iteration of the story at the Annecy Animation Festival and a new poster released by Netflix, the streaming platform has released the first teaser trailer for The One Piece. The new series was first announced back in December 2023 at the Jump Festa event in Japan, with Wit Studio producing for Netflix. The streaming service has shown great interest in Oda’s story, not only getting Toei’s anime on the platform but also developing a live-action series which is currently in production for its third season. Now, with The One Piece, Netflix is aiming to deliver the definitive adaptation of the story.

As was already expected thanks to previous reports and press releases, this first season of The One Piece will focus on The East Blue Saga. This first arc of the manga showcases the beginnings of Luffy’s pirate journey, and how he recruits the original members of the Straw Hats, which includes navigator/cat burglar Nami, Pirate Hunter Zoro, sharpshooter Usopp, and chef Sanji. The trailer provides a brief glimpse at this new adaptation, and the vivid animation provided by Wit Studio, who are responsible for other popular anime adaptations such as Spy x Family and Attack on Titan.

Interestingly, Masashi Koizuka, who is credited as the director on The One Piece, also served as director on the first three seasons of Attack on Titan. Despite being completely different in tone and genre, Koizuka has proved with Attack on Titan that he has an eye for action and visual storytelling. That much is evident from the trailer, as Wit Studio has given One Piece an impressive visual upgrade. Besides Toei Animation’s film recaps, which are condensed versions of the story arcs in the manga, the East Blue Saga hasn’t been animated since the start of the original anime.

It will be exciting to see how Netflix’s The One Piece efficiently adapts future story arcs, especially since the production doesn’t have to worry about waiting for new chapters to be released. The first season, set to debut in February 2027, is only seven episodes long. The episode count is a big indication of how the production isn’t looking to waste any time, instead prioritizing being a faithful adaptation with no padding. Netflix is clearly going all in on its vast catalog of animated projects, both original and licensed. The One Piece has the chance to last a long time on the streaming platform.
