A seaside town boasts what has been described as the UK’s “best museum” according to impressed holidaymakers. High praise for the Margate-based museum can be found online as people pitch it as one of the best activities in the UK.
Those who found themselves visiting the beautiful seaside town noted the museum is a must-see. The Crab Museum has been open since 2021 and resides in a wonderful building on Broad Street.
The museum is dedicated to not only showing the history of crabs but how they affect the climate, biology and history.
TimeOut noted the museum as the best in the area as well as the UK, and those who have been agree.
One review on TripAdvisor reads: “What a fantastic place! This is a museum for every age, so don’t think you have to have/bring kids in order to go there.
“The intention is clearly to pass on knowledge and make the visitor understand and care for crustaceans but this is all done with fun and an adorable lightness of touch. The staff are wonderful, hugely knowledgeable, funny and engaging.”
Another added: “A genuinely brilliant experience. A small museum run by some delightful gentlemen, who are as funny as they are knowledgeable.
“Our seven-year-old daughter absolutely loved learning more about crabs – becoming a friend of the museum and spending the next days show-and-tell at school raving about the experience and her new-found crab knowledge. It’s such a lovely thing to hear from people who are so passionate and enthusiastic about a subject – their passion infected us all!”
A description of the museum reads: “Crabs are incredibly diverse. They are tiny, huge, cute, scary, vulnerable, indestructible and millions of years old. They affect all of our lives in ways many of us don’t even realise – from maintaining the oceans, to helping us with important new medicines. In fact, crabs may well have already saved your life!”
“Crabs can teach us about biology, climate change, evolutionary history and much much more. But, with the right frame of mind, they can also teach us about ourselves. This is why we created Crab Museum – to roll science, humour and philosophy into a unique and satisfyingly baffling day out.”
It added: “Visit the award winning Crab Museum and discover the secrets of these remarkable animals, from the forgotten story of the giant Margate crab to what the extinct Sooty Crayfish has in common with fidget spinners.”
