Three telltale signs of diabetes can manifest the moment you wake up, according to Abbas Kanani, a pharmacist at Chemist Click. Diabetes symptoms can be notoriously difficult to identify, as they don’t necessarily leave you feeling ill, meaning countless individuals remain oblivious to their health condition.
Mr Kanani highlighted three physical sensations that could point towards Type 2 diabetes, all of which become apparent upon waking. Mr Kanani previously revealed to Express.co.uk: “You may notice you have increased thirst, or hunger, or feel the need to pee frequently.” Polydipsia, or excessive thirst, is one of the “initial” symptoms of diabetes, according to Diabetes.co.uk, reports Surrey Live.
While feeling thirsty from time to time is perfectly normal, a persistent or unusually intense thirst — even after drinking fluids — could serve as a warning sign of the condition.
Polyphagia, or excessive hunger, is one of the three primary indicators of diabetes, according to the NHS.
When someone has Type 2 diabetes, the body finds it difficult to draw energy from the food consumed, which can result in persistent and overwhelming hunger.
The final symptom highlighted by the pharmacist is polyuria, which refers to a recurring need to urinate more frequently than usual.
The NHS recommends contacting your GP “as soon as possible” should you notice any symptoms that might suggest diabetes; a straightforward blood test can determine whether you have the condition.
For those already living with the condition, Mr Kanani stressed the significance of breakfast in keeping blood sugar levels in check.
Mr Kanani advised: “The body’s blood sugar levels are naturally high when we wake up and it is generally recommended to eat between one to one-and-a-half hours after waking.”
According to the NHS, the most common symptoms of Type 2 diabetes are:
- Feeling very tired
- Peeing more than usual
- Feeling thirsty all the time
- Losing weight without trying to
Other symptoms can include:
- Blurred vision
- Cuts or wounds taking longer to heal
- Itching around your penis or vagina, or you keep getting thrush
These symptoms are the same for both adults and children. If you develop symptoms (not everyone does), they may develop gradually.
