Since Paramount Pictures announced a Call of Duty movie in 2025, the movie has been shrouded in secrecy. Based on the popular video game series that boasts dozens of titles that have been released over more than twenty years, there is plenty of source material to draw from. So far, the only known information is that the film will be directed by Peter Berg, written by Taylor Sheridan, and will be released in theaters on Jun. 30, 2028.
According to Variety, Call of Duty director Peter Berg revealed at Fanatics Fest in New York City that the upcoming Call of Duty movie would be “set in the Modern Warfare Universe.” Berg revealed this during the “Call of Duty in Culture Panel,” which was promoting the upcoming October release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Variety also reports that Paramount has plans for a Call of Duty television series following the film.
While Call of Duty began as a World War II-set game, the franchise quickly grew to include sub-series within the wider brand. One of these was called Modern Warfare, which began with 2007’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Modern Warfare, the franchise’s first entry not set during World War II, used a contemporary setting. It was followed by the 2009 sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the 2011 sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. All three games were rebooted, starting in 2019. The upcoming game, Modern Warfare 4, is set within the rebooted timeline.
It is unclear if Berg’s comments about the upcoming Call of Duty film taking place “in the Modern Warfare Universe” mean the movie will adapt one of the central games. The Modern Warfare games typically follow Captain John Price and his Task Force 141, so there is a central character the films could pull from. ‘The film could follow the approach of adaptations like Assassin’s Creed or Fallout, telling original stories with new characters set in the games’ universe without contradicting existing narratives.
Paramount Pictures has quickly become one of the top studios for video game adaptations, producing hits like Sonic the Hedgehog and gaining the rights to the upcoming Street Fighter. Call of Duty has the potential to be one of the studio’s biggest franchises yet, with the video game series having sold over 500 million copies. The question is, will the Call of Duty brand name be enough to draw audiences to see the movie as a mainstream summer blockbuster and not a war film, which since the 2000s has often struggled at the box office?
