GTA 6 Fans Split On New PlayStation Change

Grand Theft Auto 6 fans haven’t had a moment of peace since preorders became available, its two editions’ prices were revealed, and it was announced that there would be no genuine physical release. Not long after, PlayStation announced plans for an all-digital future, wherein discs will no longer be produced for new games by January 28, which appears to be wholly egregious and has been met with a ton of concern.

While PlayStation has yet to issue a formal statement addressing fans’ concerns or criticisms, the company has nonetheless made one change in the meantime. The other week, PlayStation was truly leaning into its Grand Theft Auto 6 marketing the other week by swapping its social media banner to the game’s key art and the PlayStation App logo to Grand Theft Auto 6’s sunset color palette gradient, but these themes have been changed once again.

On Twitter/X, users like GTA 6 Countdown have noticed that PlayStation swapped its official app’s logo back to its ordinary blue color and its social media banner to key art for NBA 2K26: Season 8. It wasn’t expected that PlayStation would rebrand and fully immerse itself in a marketing campaign for Grand Theft Auto 6 for the next four months, to be fair. Even so, some fans find it curious that this ‘campaign’ was brief and abrupt, with the choice made to swap Grand Theft Auto 6 out already.

User Timothy_ose, for instance, thinks that Rockstar would want a bit of separation from PlayStation: “Rockstar probably asked them to remove it. They don’t want any of that criticism.” True or not, this is probably a conclusion that many gamers will naturally come to, considering how quickly this theme swap has occurred amid PlayStation’s current controversy.

Others, like user prissypuffy, understand that this is simply how marketing works sometimes: “It’s very common for a company to change their app icon to something and change it back for promotion purposes.” In fact, we may be able to expect the PlayStation App logo to feature a solid yellow background at the start of the fall in order for there to be a bit of on-brand marketing in play for the release of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine.

Until an actual reason for this change beyond common marketing practices is confirmed, it is unlikely that there was some ulterior reason for the swap. That doesn’t make PlayStation’s dicey situation any less dire, anyway, and it’ll be interesting to see how fans respond to any future cross-promotional marketing that PlayStation and/or Grand Theft Auto 6 are involved in.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
