New ‘Neuromancer’ Trailer Promises Cyberpunk Thrills in Apple TV Adaptation

Apple TV has been working on an adaptation of Neuromancer, William Gibson’s 1984 novel widely credited with creating the cyberpunk genre, for years. Now, things are finally picking up.

According to the official description, Neuromancer “follows a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.” Case is played by Callum Turner (Masters of the Air) and Molly by Briana Middleton (Sharper). The show is created by Graham Roland (Dark Winds) and J.D. Dillard (The Twilight Zone).

Neuromancer was one of the first works to popularize concepts like jacking into a three-dimensional cyberspace, dystopian super-cities sharply divided between the haves and the have-nots, and human characters augmented with technological enhancements. It went on to influence movies like Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix, books like Altered Carbon, and video games like Deus Ex. You can see all of those influences at work in the new teaser trailer:

William Gibson himself serves as an executive producer on Neuromancer. He also reviewed drafts, was available for questions about the source material, and offered suggestions. Despite many attempts, Neuromancer has never before been adapted for the screen. With the original author involved in the Apple TV show, hopefully this first adaptation will be successful.

And it seems to have found the right home. Between Silo, Severance, Pluribus, and more, Apple TV has become the premier place for all things science fiction. If any streaming service has the experience and will to pull off a show like Neuromancer, it’s this one.

Neuromancer also stars Mark Strong (Armitage), Peter Sarsgaard (John Ashpool), Joseph Lee (Hideo), Clémence Poésy (Marie-France Tessier), Emma Laird (Linda Lee), Dane DeHaan (Peter Riviera), Max Irons (Jean Tessier-Ashpool), André De Shields (Julius Deane), and

Marc Menchaca (Dixie Flatline). The first season consists of 10 episodes of will premiere on Jan. 22, 2027. It’s unknown if this season will adapt the whole of the novel or stretch out the story over the course of multiple seasons. If Neuromancer is a success, Apple TV can always adapt Gibson’s novels Count Zero (1986) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988). Together, these three books form the Sprawl trilogy.
