One of the Most Underrated War Movies Is Now 25 Years Old — and It’s Set for New Release

During the 2000s, the war genre underwent a major transformation, as filmmakers revitalized period warfare through sweeping spectacles like Ridley Scott’s historical drama Kingdom of Heaven and Peter Weir’s high-seas drama Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, while also honing in on raw, gritty depictions of both mental and physical combat with the likes of Black Hawk Down and Jarhead. However, with so many different titles pulling audiences into theaters, some movies flew completely under the radar. One of those recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and it’s ready to reclaim the screen with a brand-new release.

Enemy at the Gates debuted in March 2001, with director Jean-Jacques Annaud shifting the grand, sprawling scale of the Battle of Stalingrad into a tense, highly claustrophobic psychological dual between two elite snipers: Jude Law‘s Vassili Zaitsev, a fictionalized version of a real-life Soviet hero, and Ed Harris‘ Major König, an elite German marksman sent to eliminate his bitter rival. The film grossed $97 million worldwide against a production budget of $68 million, making it a box office bomb. To add further insult to injury, critics were also heavily divided, leaving it with a mediocre 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The overall consensus was that its clunky dialogue and melodramatic romantic subplot detracted from the historical gravitas of the Battle of Stalingrad, making it a weaker genre entry.

However, general moviegoers were much more receptive, viewing Enemy at the Gates as a thrilling, highly entertaining piece of popcorn cinema. It boasts an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is significantly higher than the critics’ verdict. The film has gained a cult following among war movie fans over the years, with fans of tactical first-person shooters enjoying the duel between the two central characters. As a testament to its enduring legacy, Enemy at the Gates is getting an exciting new release this year.

Paramount Home Media Distribution is celebrating Enemy at the Gates’ quarter-century milestone by releasing the movie on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time. According to Blu-ray.com, the physical media release is scheduled to arrive on the market on Aug. 25, 2026, as a collectible steelbook, featuring both the original posters on either side. The premium package houses a 4K UHD disc, a standard Blu-ray, and a digital copy, as well as a number of bonus features, including a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s production.
