Now that a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica has been officially announced, basically nothing seems to be out of the realm of possibility for the Resident Evil franchise going forward. Resident Evil Code: Veronica was the one classic-era game that seemed the most untouchable out of the bunch, with the most room for creative liberties to be taken yet the most obscure and convoluted story to tackle, suggesting that Capcom truly will continue to remake every mainline Resident Evil game in its catalog.
Resident Evil remake rumors and leaks would have us believing that every game Capcom has yet to remake currently has one in development. As is the case with any rumor, fans should be cautious and await official information related to new games, if and/or when such details arrive. Meanwhile, fans can’t help but get excited about how soon we might receive a brand-new Resident Evil 1 remake.
According to user AestheticGamer/Dusk Golem on X, a new remake of Resident Evil 1 “started early production nearly a year ago.” They also predict that it won’t enter into full production until after Resident Evil Veronica is finished with the “crunch period” that it’s in right now.
On Reddit, fans are fairly excited about how soon we could receive a new Resident Evil 1 remake. User massivebawbag writes, “The original RE is actually quite a small game when compared to the other entries. Would not be surprised if this releases in 2029,” for instance, while user YourVeryOwnCat “thought they were going to do the RE0 remake before RE1.”
A remake of Resident Evil 0 arriving before a new remake of Resident Evil 1 would arguably be ideal narratively because it could allow for a more cohesive segue from one to the other, particularly in terms of Resident Evil’s Rebecca Chambers and how she’s retconned between each.
User WarTate writes, “I can’t imagine the weight Capcom is probably feeling on their shoulders to do this one right, considering they’ve not only already remade the game, but it’s still regarded as arguably the best remake Capcom has done, still.” There are certainly going to be high expectations for a remake of Resident Evil 1, perhaps even more so than the Resident Evil 4 remake.
As the game that started the franchise, Resident Evil is still hailed as one of the best survival horror games ever. While Resident Evil 4 is also great, it’s far more action-oriented as a result of its fundamental changes to the franchise’s formula.
The first Resident Evil game being remade again will certainly come with intense scrutiny from fans. That said, it’d also probably be one of the most highly anticipated remakes in the entire Resident Evil saga.
