The sci-fi fantasy series might not have the same global stranglehold on the industry as it used to, but the world of Sword Art Online still has plenty of storytelling potential to satisfy fans of the series, both new and old. While there are still plenty of fans that prefer the classic era of the franchise, SAO seems to only get better over time and with each successive outing.
Although there has been plenty of excitement over SAO finally returning to the era that started it all in a brand-new storyline after its long hiatus, the series’ latest outing has been met with a generally mixed reception from SAO fans already.
We’re still eagerly waiting to hear more about the next SAO movie being announced this month, but in the meantime, fans of the series are getting a brand-new Triple-A game with Echoes of Aincrad. This new take on the franchise follows a relatively linear RPG narrative set in the original death game.
The initial announcement was met with a wave of excitement, and some fans have been completely won over by the demo. Reddit user Kirin1000 describes it as a “sleeper hit JRPG for 2026” that they “weren’t expecting” going into the experience.
Even with the general excitement and positive impressions from some players, not everyone is on the same page, as other fans were quick to share more critical thoughts. Azelvan argues that the “game definitely feels like it still needs some more time before releasing,” and Nhytex_ even went as far to say that the demo isn’t “exactly making me excited to want to play more” after the full release.
Despite the gameplay and general impression making it seem like Echoes of Aincrad‘s tie-in story still has plenty to offer for fans of the series, many of the biggest complaints seem to come from players like Thehuntinleopard disappointed by the “idea to strip the mmo parts of the game“, especially when combined with “the lack of customization” for the player character when both aspects are so engrained in the original death game’s concept.
Even though Sword Art Online has never been afraid to experiment with spin-offs or entirely new stories for fans to enjoy, the consensus seems to be that Echoes of Aincrad isn’t a terrible game by any means, and even has many improvements over its competitors with enhanced visuals and combat. Even so, “the world definitely feels superficial,” as Kirin1000 puts it, and the game isn’t likely to blow anyone away.
Thankfully, you won’t solely have to rely on other players or buy the game at full price to see if it might be up your alley, as you can download the free demo for Sword Art Online Echoes of Aincrad ahead of release for yourself.
