Motorhome and campervan owners are set to face new parking restrictions in Saltburn from next week under a trial scheme introduced by Redcar and Cleveland Council. The changes will come into force on Monday, July 6, as part of an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order aimed at balancing the needs of residents and visitors to the seaside town.
The council said the move follows concerns about motorhomes parking on Marine Parade for long periods, particularly during the busy summer season.
Under the new rules, motorhomes will only be allowed to park in existing marked bays on the north side of Marine Parade. Parking will be limited to four hours between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, with no return within four hours. Parking will remain unrestricted after 5pm and all day on Sundays.
Motorhomes will also be banned at all times from unmarked sections of Marine Parade on both the north and south sides. These areas will be marked with single yellow lines and signage, with the restriction applying only to motorhomes.
The council said the measures do not amount to a full ban on overnight parking. It said: “The restrictions do not fully prevent overnight parking, but they limit where and for how long motorhomes may stay. These restrictions aim to manage overall parking demand, not to ban motorhomes, but they do prevent long-term or sustained stays on Marine Parade.”
Councillor Carl Quartermain, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said the authority had listened to both residents and motorhome owners.
“The new restrictions will provide an area for motorhomes to park while introducing a time limit on how long they can stay, helping to ensure parking spaces remain available for residents and visitors alike,” he said.
He added: “We recognise that people hold strong views on this issue and that is precisely why we are introducing the measures through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. We will continue listening throughout the trial period before deciding on the long-term future of the scheme.”
Residents living on Marine Parade between Garnet Street and Saltburn Road will be eligible for parking permits allowing unlimited parking in marked bays. Households will be issued letters explaining how to apply, with applications required within four weeks.
Eligible households can apply for one permit per vehicle, plus up to two visitor permits, while businesses can apply for one permit.
The council confirmed that no disabled bays will be removed, and Blue Badge holders will continue to park free in council car parks. Non-motorhome Blue Badge holders may also use the single yellow line areas on Marine Parade.
The trial will allow the council to monitor the impact of the restrictions before making a final decision.
