With summer in full swing, many people may be looking for somewhere far away to head off to soak up the sun. A recent list published by Big 7 explores the 50 best islands in the world. From Asia to the Americas, this diverse list takes you on a journey though all aspects of island life.
However, you may not have to go too far from home after all if you plan to go somewhere picture perfect. The island itself is the Isle of Mull, located in Scotland. It is the second-largest of the country’s inner Hebrides, and made the cut in 23rd place due to its stunning coastline and quaint seafront buildings. It is Scotland’s fourth largest island, with a population of 3,063. This increases massively during tourism season.
The island is renowned for its highland cows, which can often be seen bathing and relaxing in the clear blue sea.
The island also has an abundance of wildlife. It is a great place to go whale and dolphin watching, and if you’re lucky you may also spot a golden or white-tailed sea eagle.
The highest point of the island is its centre point, Ben More, a mountain that towers over the surrounding scenery at a height of 966m.
Perhaps the most famous part of Mull is its capital, Tobermory, which stands out against nature’s backdrop due to its bright and colourful buildings
Don’t be surprised if you recognise this town, as it acted as the filming location for popular children’s TV show Balamory.
The island that topped the list was Sri Lanka, which was praised for “having it all.”
It was praised for its combination of ancient temples, mountains, and wildlife safaris.
Other islands that made the list include Milos in Greece, Corsica, Greenland and Mauritius.
Across the list, Mull is the only UK island that managed to make the list, coming in at number 23.
