Willie Nelson is speaking out to protect the Texas town he has called home for decades. The country music icon shared a heartfelt message about a proposal that could change the rural community forever. He urged people to think about the future of the farmland and natural resources. Nelson expressed his concerns in a social media post.
Willie Nelson urges Texans to protect rural land from AI data center projects
Nelson, who turned 93 in April, said he still owns a home and farmland in Abbott, Texas, where he grew up. He wrote, “I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night.” He said communities throughout the country must resist data centers moving onto rural property. His comments came as developers proposed building as many as 56 data centers near Abbott.
“The last thing we need is a loud, water-thieving, light-polluting data center anywhere near our town,” Nelson wrote. He said rural America has always depended on open spaces, local businesses, family farms, and a strong bond with the land. He further stated that people should preserve farmland rather than build large industrial projects. “Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses,” he added.
Nelson concluded by asking people to safeguard valuable resources, particularly in Abbott. For decades, he has supported family farmers and co-founded the Farm Aid music festival in 1985. At 93, he continues to balance advocacy with an active music career. His career began as a songwriter and radio DJ in the Pacific Northwest and Texas before moving to Nashville.
The 15-time Grammy winner released his first studio album in 1962 and now has 105 studio albums. He is still touring and will publish his new book, The Last Leaf, on Nov. 10. The book looks back at his career and notes that he released 21 studio albums, wrote 50 new songs, and performed hundreds of shows over the last 12 years. Nelson recently told The New Yorker, “I’m in pretty good shape, physically, for ninety-two,” while his wife, Annie D’Angelo, joked, “He just keeps going and going.”
