That film is 2026’s The Devil’s Mouth, a formulaic horror movie that hits the right notes and will appeal to followers of the niche subgenre of shark movies. It follows a group of college friends enjoying a holiday in Thailand while looking to break a few rules. Sara and Max know each other, but their friendship is strained due to Max’s weird demeanor. Sara is the lonely person in the group, with James, Adrienne and Greg remaining oblivious to the drama. After all, it is vacation time.
After a careless incident in which Sara is literally left and abandoned in the water, the group comes up with a terrible idea: they will explore an underwater cave where safety is an afterthought. It is a place called the Devil’s Mouth, and inside there lies an unexpected threat: a hungry and aggressive shark that will stop at nothing when its peace is disturbed.
Those deciding to watch The Devil’s Mouth know the kind of movie they’re going to experience. This is, undoubtedly, a shark thriller with exactly the kind of setup you’d expect. The film doesn’t try to depart from its subgenre, and tirelessly delivers the thrills fans are hoping for. With a runtime of 104 minutes, it doesn’t waste much time with unnecessary super cuts of teens having fun and heads straight to the horror mayhem in the second act.
The action sequences are very good, and while the film doesn’t require top-notch performances, it doesn’t have major flaws in that department. Kathryn Newton is the lead in this one, and once again, the young MCU star known for roles in Lady Bird, Freaky, and Abigail keeps cementing her reputation as a formidable modern scream queen. She has enough dramatic stamina to carry the film on her shoulders.

The Devil’s Mouth was released on Prime Video on July 29, 2026, courtesy of Lionsgate and Amazon MGM Studios. Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner penned the script, while Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down, Kick-Ass 2) directed the film. It stars Newton alongside rising stars such as Gavin Casalegno, Lana Condor, Nico Hiraga, and Tommi Rose. Tayme Thapthimthong, known for his role in The White Lotus, also appears in the supporting cast.
After just one week on streaming, the film became a global smash hit, landing the No. 1 spot on Prime Video’s global charts. Per FlixPatrol, it ranks above theatrical hits such as Project Hail Mary, fan-favorite titles like Masters of the Universe, and Jason Statham’s Shelter. In the U.S. charts, Masters of the Universe and The Amateur hold the first two spots, with The Devil’s Mouth sitting at No. 3.
