Ethan Hawke’s Hit Crime Series Hits Exciting Filming Milestone In Set Photos

New photos from the set of Ethan Hawke’s popular crime TV series reveal that the production just hit an exciting milestone.

In September 2025, The Lowdown premiered on FX, starring Hawke as Lee Raybon, who’s loosely based on reporter Lee Roy Chapman and gets pulled into Tulsa’s criminal underworld. Co-starring Keith David as private investigator Marty Brunner, the show was quickly met with critical acclaim, resulting in FX renewing The Lowdown for season 2. Now there’s a big update on how filming is coming along for the sophomore season.

The Lowdown creator Sterlin Harjo posted on Threads that season 2 has concluded principal photography. He wrote the caption, “We ate. We finished. We lived. Season 2” to accompany the collection of photos taken of the cast and crew during filming, including Hawke. The Lowdown season 2 began rolling cameras at the beginning of June.

The FX series introduces viewers to Hawke’s Lee, a citizen journalist and self-proclaimed Tulsa “truthstorian” who divides his time between working at a rare bookstore and uncovering the city’s corruption. At the beginning of season 1, Lee publishes an exposé on the powerful Washberg family, and that’s followed by the suspicious suicide of Tim Blake Nelson’s Dale Washberg, the black sheep of the family. Lee subsequently embarks on a new truth-finding mission to figure out the circumstances of Dale’s death, which brings him into contact with David’s Marty.

Although Hawke and David are The Lowdown’s only two series regulars, the lineup of recurring actors in season 1 included Kaniehtiio Horn, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Macon Blair, Scott Shepherd, Tracy Letts, and Kyle MacLachlan, among many others. ScreenRant’s The Lowdown review rated season 1 eight out of 10 stars, stating that Lee is “one of the best new TV characters of the year,” and that this “subversive comedy noir” accomplishes its goal of delivering “dark, twisted, ‘Should I be laughing at this?’ laughs.”

While plot details for The Lowdown season 2 remain under wraps, the lineup of new actors appearing in the next batch of episodes includes Tommy Lee Jones, Betty Gilpin, Austin Amelio, Martha Plimpton, and Clifton Collins Jr. In addition to his on-camera work, Hawke produces the series alongside Harjo, Garrett Basch, and his wife, Ryan Shawhughes.

Not only does The Lowdown take place in Oklahoma like Harjo’s previous series Reservation Dogs, both shows exist within the same universe. This was revealed when Paulina Alexis and Devery Jacobs cameoed as their Reservation Dogs characters Willie Jack and Elora Danan Postoak, respectively, in separate episodes of the newer series. Hawke previously guest-starred in the Reservation Dogs episode “Elora’s Dad” as a character named Rick Miller.

It remains to be seen when The Lowdown season 2 will premiere, but whenever that does happen, new episodes will be available to stream on Hulu the day after their FX broadcast. Reservation Dogs’ three seasons can also be accessed on the streaming platform. Meanwhile, Hawke’s next movie, The Weight, premieres in theaters on September 18, and he can also be heard voicing Batman in the animated series Batwheels.
