Hollywood A-Lister Exposes the “Unachievable” Industry Standards She Faced Early On

Scarlett Johansson has opened up about the intense beauty standards she experienced early in her career. The 41-year-old actress shared that celebrities today have more room to express their individuality and personal style.

Scarlett Johansson opens up on how celebrity culture noticeably relaxed over past decades

Johansson, who began acting as a child and earned critical acclaim for her role in The Horse Whisperer at age 13, appeared on Good Housekeeping’s Home in Five series. During the conversation, she discussed how Hollywood has significantly changed its fashion standards over the past two decades.

The Marriage Story actress said, as stated by The Blast, “Actors are able to express their personal style on the red carpet much more than they ever did before. There was such a standard on how movie stars were supposed to look. It was unachievable, and it didn’t allow for personal style in the same way. Now at the airport or on the train, you see people wearing pimple patches and eye masks and whatever they want to feel confident.”

Before this, Johansson, who built an impressive career playing Natasha Romanoff in multiple Marvel Avengers films, also spoke about how Hollywood often offered her roles centered on male perspectives and her appearance, according to RadarOnline.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Johansson, who is married to Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost, said, “When I was younger, a lot of the roles I was offered, or I went for, had their ambitions or character arcs revolving around their own desirability, or the male gaze, or a male-centered story.”

During a 2022 appearance on Vogue’s “Life in Looks” series, per People, Johansson discussed how her fashion sense has evolved with age. She said she became more confident and connected to herself in her late 30s, adding, “I hope to continue to get to know myself better as I get older and I think you’ll see that reflected in my life in looks.”
