Apple has spent the past few years building a reputation as a dependable home for the thriller. On the TV side, Severance turned corporate paranoia into the streamer’s defining hit, and its film division has been quietly working a similar lane with mid-budget entries like The Gorge and Echo Valley. None of these movies make the biggest headlines, but together they’ve given Apple a steady identity while its larger theatrical swings come and go. The next film in that pipeline, though, has kept an unusually low profile.
It was announced last October, filled out its cast over the winter, and then more or less vanished from the trades. Now, an offhand remark at San Diego Comic-Con this month has finally given us some real news about the film, titled Sponsor. The psychological thriller reunites Apple with Shrinking star Jason Segel and pairs him with John C. Reilly. According to one of its producers, filming has now wrapped. The update came from producer Brad Fuller during Collider‘s “Producers on Producing” panel, where Fuller appeared alongside his Platinum Dunes partner Andrew Form and X-Men veteran Simon Kinberg.
Asked who gives the longest notes on a movie, Fuller answered, “Studio executives, for sure. Pages and pages and pages of notes,” before singling out one recent exception. “Both have occurred a lot. A lot. But I just finished making a movie for Apple, and their notes were so good. So solid, very directed, two pages, and it was a great experience.” When asked which movie he meant, Fuller confirmed it was Sponsor. He then said:
“Jason Segel and John C. Reilly. We just finished.”
It is the first meaningful status update the film has had since the casting announcements. For anyone who missed the earlier news, Sponsor is based on an original idea co-written by Jason Segel and director James Ponsoldt, and the premise plays directly to both of their strengths. Segel stars as Peter, a man whose drunk-driving accident lands him in a court-ordered recovery program. He chooses the program while insisting he does not actually have a problem, and that is where he meets the enigmatic Jerry (John C. Reilly), a sponsor who may not be the lifeline Peter believes he is.
Ponsoldt directed Smashed back in 2012, still one of the better films ever made about alcoholism and recovery, so this thriller — built around a twelve-step relationship — arguably sees him revisiting familiar ground with darker intentions. He and Segel also made The End of the Tour together in 2015, which quietly remains the best dramatic work of Segel’s career, before reteaming on Shrinking, where both serve as executive producers. The more unexpected name here is Platinum Dunes itself. Michael Bay’s company built its name on horror properties like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Purge, and A Quiet Place, so a talky two-hander about sobriety and manipulation sits well outside its usual lane, even if the company has edged toward leaner thrillers lately with films like Drop.
Fuller’s enthusiasm on the panel suggests Platinum Dunes had a positive experience working with Apple. His account about the studio’s hands-on feedback may help explain why filmmakers continue to sign on with Apple despite its mixed theatrical results. The streamer has not announced a release date, and given how little runway these mid-sized Apple originals often get before release, it may stay quiet for a while longer.
With Sponsor only just out of production, 2027 feels like the safest destination for now. With a cast and creative team like this, it’s one worth keeping an eye on.
