Perranporth Beach is a firm favourite with visitors to Cornwall, attracting families, surfers and dog walkers to its dramatic stretch of Atlantic coastline. The beach boasts a vast sweep of golden sand, backed by rugged cliffs and dunes, and stretches for around three miles.
At low tide, the sand joins up with neighbouring Perran Sands, creating an impressive expanse for beachgoers to explore. Located on Cornwall’s north coast, Perranporth is around eight miles from both Truro and Newquay, making it an accessible choice for those exploring the county’s popular coastal destinations. There is far more to Perranporth than its sandy shoreline, with the area closely linked to St Piran, the patron saint of Cornwall.
The surrounding dunes are home to the remains of St Piran’s Oratory, often known as the “lost church”, which is believed to date back to around the sixth century.
Perranporth also has an unusual place in the history of British surfing. Local Tom Tremewan is credited with making some of the country’s earliest surfboards in the early 20th century, with reports suggesting he used coffin lids to make the boards.
The beach has been recognised as one of the most “beautiful” in the UK, based on Tripadvisor reviews submitted by previous visitors.
Specialists at Iglu Cruise previously gathered data from Tripadvisor, focusing on the highest-rated beaches with over 1,000 reviews apiece, crowning one as “the most beautiful” in the UK, with Woolacombe also featuring in the top 10.
The experts from Iglu said: “Perranporth Beach in Perranporth, Cornwall, England is the sixth highest-rated beach in the UK. The beach is owned and managed by Perranzabuloe Parish Council but is free to use for both locals and visitors.
“Surrounded by rolling dunes and tall cliffs, the vast sandy beach has something for everyone, whether that be swimming, snorkelling, riding horses or just taking in the fantastic views.”

The golden shoreline stretches across three miles, affording stunning views across the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can look forward to all the hallmarks of a classic British seaside resort – including a pub situated directly on the beach.
The Watering Hole describes itself as “the UK’s only bar on a beach” and sits right on the sand. A previous visitor took to Tripadvisor to review the beach, writing: “Perranporth is a stunning place. The beach is beautiful and we didn’t want to leave. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.
“The beach is picture perfect and it’s a jewel in Cornwall’s very impressive crown. The town is a delight and all the amenities are there. Nice pubs and cafes are dotted all around to cater for all. The beach is simply the cherry on the cake.”

The beach is equally praised for its dog-friendly ethos, making it an ideal destination for a family stroll.
Another visitor said: “We visited the beach as it’s dog-friendly…our dog loves the beach and to be able to run around. The tide was out when we visited, so the beach was quite vast. No idea what it’s like when the tide is in.
“The beach is clean, and there is a cafe on the beach so you can sit and enjoy a drink whilst people watching and watching our dog run around. Everyone we met was friendly, and all the dogs we saw seemed to be having a great time.”
