‘Queen of the Damned’: Assad Zaman and Eric Bogosian Say There’s ‘Work to Do’ on Armand and Daniel in Season 4 (Exclusive)

The Vampire Lestat was the beginning of the maker-fledgling story between Armand (Assad Zaman) and Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian). Season 3 of the AMC drama showed Armand confessing his love for Daniel, and that confession pulls from the plot of Anne Rice‘s Vampire Chronicles, but the story didn’t have enough time to really develop. Fans are eager for that to change in Season 4, titled Queen of the Damned. Zaman and Bogosian are, too. Here, the actors share their hopes for Armand and Daniel in Season 4, and Zaman admits there’s a lot of “work to do” with these two.

Interview With the Vampire was renewed for Season 4 during San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Sheila Atim will return in an expanded role as the title character, Akasha, the mother of all vampires. The Vampire Lestat finale set up her return when revealing that Lestat (Sam Reid) was recording his narrative Failures album from his living room amid an apocalyptic landscape. The destruction was caused by Akasha. Lestat said that his band’s tour and the final concert made her return, but that cataclysmic concert won’t be seen until Season 4.

In the Season 3 finale, Armand and Daniel worked together to try to kill Louis (Jacob Anderson) and Lestat. Armand said it was about trying to prevent the Great Conversion at first, but it was really about revenge against the two vampires. Armand and Daniel decapitated Louis and Lestat at the end of The Vampire Lestat Episode 6, and then Armand tortured Louis into making amends for their decades-long relationship. Daniel held Lestat’s head captive in a bowling bag while the body was with Armand.

The vampire rock star’s consciousness reviewed the “failures” of his life in a limbo fever dream until his and Louis’ heads were restored to their bodies. Daniel’s fate was left up in the air after his final shot of the season showed him on the verge of a brawl with Raglan James (Justin Kirk) and a group of Talamasca agents.

Earlier in the season, Armand confessed that romantic feelings for Daniel impacted his focus in the Dubai interview. Zaman previously told TV Insider that Armand wasn’t aware of those feelings in Dubai; he made sense of them in hindsight. Armand called Daniel his companion in the finale, but Daniel notably didn’t say the same of his maker.

Armand and Daniel’s first interaction of the season came in Episode 4, when Armand tried to make amends to his first fledgling in a bowling alley. Daniel was enraged and yelled at his maker for turning him against his will a few weeks after the Dubai interview ended.

When Armand admitted his romantic feelings for Daniel in Episode 5, they came as an unbelievable shock, one the journalist needed time to process. By the time the finale ends, it doesn’t seem that Daniel’s done processing it.

It will be important to their storyline in Season 4 to address the violent nature of Daniel’s turning, as both Bogosian and Zaman described it to us. While Daniel had agency in his participation in the finale events, Bogosian feels there is some “Stockholm Syndrome” going on between the maker and fledgling. Both of the actors want to explore what their characters really mean to each other in the fourth season.

“For me, it feels like some version of a Stockholm Syndrome where Daniel has been so battered and thrown around by all kinds of new information while also interacting with a tremendously powerful being,” Bogosian explained. “I mean, this guy is way more powerful. First of all, he’s the oldest of the vampires that we have encountered other than Akasha, so who knows what this guy’s got up his sleeve, not to mention his pathological problems.”

“We certainly are all aware of relationships where one person has so much more power than the other person to the point where the other person’s personality is almost being erased, and I think there’s a process of that going on where Daniel is kind of mesmerized,” Bogosian continued. “I think he’s going to clutch at the last couple of things that he knows are true about himself, which is, I believe, courage, that he knows he has courage, he knows he’s smart, and he’s going to eventually pull himself back together again and pull out of this.”

“But he’s also not just, he’s not Daniel anymore,” Bogosian noted. “He’s vampire Daniel, which is a whole other ball of wax, which that last image [of Daniel in Season 3] pretty much tells the story. He’s a vampire. He’s an animal.”

“There’s work to do here,” Zaman said in their joint interview. “Armand’s not mind-tricking Daniel. This isn’t a mind trick to get him to do what he did [in the finale], to get him to be his companion and chop their heads off. I think he’s very much autonomous, but I think that’s why there’s going to be [tension].”

Zaman feels that Armand and Daniel’s relationship is an opportunity to explore a new kind of vampire love in the series. There’s lots to unpack with their vampire bond that makes time stand still, for example.

“That should be how it is. There should be friction there going into the next season with what this relationship is going to look like,” Zaman continued. “I mean, love between vampires can be one thing or many things. And we should explore what those other things are. I’m excited to see what they could be.”

Bogosian wants Daniel to continue strengthening his vampire powers in Season 4. He has powerful blood from Armand, and Anne Rice vampire lore dictates that a vampire’s first fledgling has the strongest abilities. In Season 3, Armand taught Daniel how to walk in the sun, which is an inordinate skill for a vampire so young.

“For me, it’s all about the ongoing story, and [the finale] is going to be the slingshot into the next season…to find out where Daniel can go with this,” Bogosian said. “For me, it’s actually going to be a confluence of Daniel and Eric’s dreams to become a very powerful vampire himself so that he can do a little revenging himself. But we’ll see. I never know what these guys have up their sleeve for me. Certainly, this season was a big surprise.”

Bogosian and Zaman share their reactions to the finale script and where it left all of the characters.

“We didn’t get the last episode script until quite far into the shoot, so none of us knew what was going to happen in the final episode,” Zaman said. “Rolin [Jones, executive producer] just kept telling me, ‘Just be prepared, be prepared. Just make sure you’re prepared.’ I was like, ‘I don’t know what that means.’ And then I was like, ‘Ah, OK. I need to get down and get learning because there’s a lot to learn.’ He talks a lot in this episode, but I think it’s all stuff that has been brewing for six episodes. It’s a little play-within-a-play situation. It was lots of fun acting with Headless Louis.”

“We had a lot of conversations about what is going on, and what do we really think about what’s going on? Not in the ways that has been asked of us, but just us as two actors going, ‘What?’” Bogosian said. “And then we got to that last thing. Assad, you just totally rose to the occasion. I mean, it’s just a brilliant, incredible set piece in your laboratory with the head and all that stuff. It was pretty great given that we didn’t have a lot of warning going into this.”

Jones will be an executive producer in Season 4, but executive producer Hannah Moscovitch, who has worked on the series since Season 1, is the new showrunner for Queen of the Damned.
