Scarlett Johansson’s Sci-Fi Thriller From Elite Horror Director Recruits Jacob Elordi

Early in Scarlett Johansson‘s career, she earned a reputation for working with some of the most ambitious and talented filmmakers out there. From Robert Redford to the Coen Brothers to Sofia Coppola to Brian De Palma to Christopher Nolan, she worked with a more esteemed collection of auteurs in just her first decade of acting than some performers will ever work with in their whole careers. Once she got enlisted into the world of Marvel Studios, she had to balance her time in the world of big-budget filmmaking with more thought-provoking fare. Now that her time in the MCU has seemingly concluded, Johansson has arguably never been busier.

To borrow a reference from the MCU, Johansson is collecting acclaimed directors like Thanos collecting Infinity Stones. Her most recent efforts include collaborations with Wes Anderson, Gareth Edwards, Brad Bird, and James Gray, while she has projects with Mike Flanagan and Matt Reeves on the horizon. Another exciting upcoming project just got even more anticipated, as a Euphoria breakout has entered the mix.

As confirmed by Deadline, Johansson’s upcoming thriller Scapegoat from A24 has just added Jacob Elordi. The actor is coming off of not only the many accolades he earned in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, but this summer will see the release of The Dog Stars, which was directed by Ridley Scott. While the movie is being described as a “thriller,” it also comes from Midsommar and Eddington director Ari Aster, which only confirms we will never be able to predict what the movie is really about.

Deadline points out how sources are describing the new movie differently, with some claiming it’s about a “doctor who operates on an internet-famous person” while others say “it’s sci-fi romance” as others claim it’s just an outright drama. While Aster’s early movies Hereditary and Midsommar might be relatively straightforward in being genre stories, Beau Is Afraid and Eddington both were ambitious blends of a variety of genres, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what Scapegoat will really be about.

Johansson isn’t the only one adding yet another acclaimed director to their filmography, as Elordi is similarly earning one impressive credit after the next. The actor also worked with Sofia Coppola, playing Elvis Presley for Priscilla, as well as worked with Guillermo del Toro on the aforementioned Frankenstein. The Dog Stars is Ridley Scott’s first sci-fi movie since 2017’s Alien: Covenant, marking a welcome return to a beloved genre.

While Elordi is already busy enough, he is also at the center of speculation that he could take over the mantle of James Bond in a new movie. However, with the franchise historically casting actors who are on the cusp of stardom, only to be fully thrust into the spotlight as movie stars, it’s possible that Elordi has already become too sought-after to play 007.
