The 10-episode series follows a new crew of mercenaries in Night City.
Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 and confirmed the series will be available to stream on October 20. The second season of the Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation is still co-produced by developer CD Projekt Red and animation house Studio Trigger, but now follows an entirely new cast of mercenaries surviving in Night City.
Per Netflix’s announcement, the second season is “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge in a city that thrives on violence” and is designed to be standalone. Kai Ikarashi, a storyboard artist and animation director on the first season, will direct the 10-episode second series, according to Anime News Network, working with several other season one veterans. Those include Bartosz Sztybor, who will act as producer and showrunner; Masahiko Otsuka, a returning writer; and Ichigo Kanno, the second season’s lead character designer.
The teaser is light on plot details, but does appear to introduce the cast of edgerunners, netrunners and at least one kid-with-movie-camera the new season will follow. It also highlights what Netflix describes as the series’ “reimagined animation style,” which does seem grimier than Studio Trigger’s first take on the show.
Besides being critically well-received, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has been a boon to CD Projekt Red’s once-maligned open-world game. Cyberpunk 2077 ballooned in popularity on Steam after the first season premiered, and the developer is already working on a sequel.
