It hasn’t even been a month since Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung into movie theaters, and it’s already made a stupefying $2.22 billion at the worldwide box office. Tom Holland’s latest outing as Peter Parker has been breaking records left and right, and is currently the fifth-highest-grossing movie of all time, ahead of 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and behind 1997’s Titanic.
Brand New Day is also closing in on an important Marvel benchmark. Right now, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame holds the record for the biggest domestic gross of any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at $858 million. Brand New Day is currently right behind it at $855 million. Given that Brand New Day is still pulling people into theaters — according to Variety, it was the number one movie in the world this past weekend, the fourth time in a row it’s earned that title — it’s all but guaranteed to surpass Endgame’s domestic total in the coming week. The MCU will have a new domestic champion.
That said, Brand New Day has a ways to go if it wants to be the most successful movie in the MCU overall. Avengers: Endgame currently has a worldwide haul of $2.79 billion, a bit over $500 million ahead of Brand New Day. Some pundits are wondering if Brand New Day can close the gap, or maybe become the first movie ever to earn over $1 billion in the domestic market. Whatever happens, Sony and Marvel are no doubt working overtime to get Tom Holland to sign up for a fifth outing as Spider-Man.
New ‘Insidious’ Comes in Second to Spider-Man
Elsewhere at the box office, the latest entry in the Insidious franchise, Out of the Further, took second place this past weekend with a global haul of $60 million. With a budget of just $18 million, the movie has already paid for itself, although domestic box office receipts were down compared to the previous entry in the franchise, 2023’s The Red Door. That may have something to do with Out of the Further not being very good.
Third, fourth, and fifth place went to The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, none of which are new releases. The Odyssey has had an especially impressive run since debuting on July 17; with a worldwide haul of $1.44 billion, it’s now the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history.
Mutiny, a new action thriller starring Jason Statham, came in sixth place, earning just $7.5 million domestically against a budget of $40 million. Tony, a biographical drama about the early life of Anthony Bourdain, came in eighth, and has now made $7.2 million worldwide. With an estimated budget of just $5.5 million, it has a better chance of becoming profitable.
In ninth place we have the comedy Spa Weekend, another new release that performed poorly, earning only $3.05 million on a budget of $20 million. Finally, the brilliant slasher satire Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma came in tenth, upping its worldwide take to $4.05 million.
Although it’s mainly been driven by a few big hits, the 2026 summer movie season is still the biggest since the COVID-19 pandemic pummeled movie theaters in 2020. In September, movies like Practical Magic 2, Resident Evil, and Primetime will try to keep the momentum going.
