Taron Egerton’s Underrated 120-Minute R-Rated Action Thriller Scores New Release

Slowly but surely, Taron Egerton has become one of the most accomplished performers in the realm of action thrillers. His breakout role came in Kingsman: The Secret Service, which featured plenty of action, but coming from director Matthew Vaughn, it was a much more stylish take on highly intense combat. In addition to starring in that movie’s sequel, he also starred in 2018’s Robin Hood, where he embodied the iconic hero in a picture that once again featured action, though from a slightly more stylized perspective.

Arguably the movie that started to change the trajectory of Egerton’s career was Netflix’s Carry-On, in which he played a TSA agent who gets wrapped up in a deadly scheme on Christmas Eve. The movie did huge numbers for Netflix, and when Egerton returned to Netflix for this year’s Apex, he similarly scored monumental success. In that movie, he takes a villainous turn against a character played by Charlize Theron, with Apex becoming one of the biggest action thrillers of 2026.

One of his more overlooked entries into the genre, however, is 2025’s She Rides Shotgun. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by author Jordan Harper, and it only earned a limited theatrical release when it debuted. She Rides Shotgun is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray upgrade, which hits shelves Aug. 25.

Taron Egerton stars as newly released ex-con Nate. Marked for death by unrelenting enemies, Nate must now protect his estranged 11-year-old daughter, Polly (Ana Sophia Heger) at all costs. Also starring in the movie are Ana Sophia Heger, Rob Yang, Odessa A’zion, and David Lyons. Unfortunately, this release doesn’t come with any listed supplemental materials, so while its 4K Ultra HD upgrade is more than enough reason to purchase the item, this release won’t allow you to dive much deeper into how the experience came to life.

Part of what has made Egerton’s embrace of a grittier side of the action world so exciting is how it’s a far cry from some of the roles he’s been a favorite to play. Namely, after his work in the Kingsman films, it would have been an easy transition into the world of James Bond. With Daniel Craig wrapping up his time as 007 in No Time to Die, the franchise is in a transition period and no one has been selected to play the spy in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming movie. Despite industry pundits trying to place Egerton as Bond, he himself has vocally expressed that he’s not interested in the part.

Luckily, there are still compelling action-forward projects from Egerton, such as She Rides Shotgun.
