Taylor Sheridan’s Game-Changing Masterpiece Continues to Get More Popular

Yellowstone ended two years ago, and as of August 12, 2026, it sits at #3 on FlixPatrol’s global streaming chart. A finished show with no episodes competing against series airing fresh episodes right now and still winning – that’s Yellowstone for you. I’ve written about Westerns and this franchise in particular for years now. I can tell you with full confidence that kind of comeback almost never happens for a show that’s already complete.

Most series get one shot at finding an audience. They premiere, people watch them, and eventually everyone moves on to whatever’s new. Yellowstone broke that rule completely, and I’d argue the reason comes down to two different things happening at once: the show was made to hold up on a second watch, and Taylor Sheridan never actually stopped telling this story after the finale aired.

‘Yellowstone’ Proves You Just Need Great Characters to Make Great TV

Whenever I see someone talking about Yellowstone’s staying power, this part never comes up. Yellowstone isn’t chasing twists. John Dutton isn’t a mystery you solve; he’s a man who makes the same brutal calls season after season for reasons that make sense to him and to nobody. Watching him do it again on a rewatch somehow hits harder. You already know where his stubbornness leads, and you watch him walk into it anyway.

Compare that to a mystery-driven show like Silo or Dark. Once you know who’s responsible for the reveal, the show loses half its reason to exist. Yellowstone never asked anything of its audience except for them to sit with people who were never going to change, and it trusted that watching them fail on their own terms would still be worth your time the second or third time around.

The franchise around Yellowstone makes it stronger, too. Watch 1883. You understand exactly what James and Margaret Dutton paid for that land. Suddenly, John’s grip on that land in the original stops looking unreasonable and starts looking like grief he never processed. Similarly, if you watch 1923, you witness Jacob Dutton holding onto the ranch through drought and depression, and John’s refusal to sell an inch of that land reads as something passed down in his blood. Even though Sheridan built those stories after, it completely changes how you watch Yellowstone. It’s clearly not the same experience as it was in 2018.

The other piece of this argument is that Taylor Sheridan refuses to let the story of Yellowstone stay unfinished. Dutton Ranch brought Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton to South Texas, forcing them to start over. The show is currently on FlixPatrol’s Top 5 on Paramount+ charts alongside the original. Marshals took Kayce Dutton over to CBS. Gave the franchise a foothold outside streaming. Neither of these shows is a replacement for Yellowstone. They work as extensions of the same story. You can’t watch them without the original sitting somewhere in your head the whole time.

I don’t know if Sheridan’s plan was this meticulous from the beginning. It’s clear that he didn’t try to move on from Yellowstone and hoped people would follow him to the next best show. He just kept building from it, giving us prequels that went backward and sequels that went forward until Yellowstone stopped being a finished show and started acting like the center of a much bigger universe. Every new release is an excuse to go back and watch it, and looking at the numbers, that’s what people are doing.

Sheridan has also kept his television presence unusually strong. Landman, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, and The Madison have all helped establish him as a creator with a style, and that success has also helped newcomers identify him better. I’ve watched many shows try to frame a universe, but very few manage to draw the attention back to the original.
