A 59p superfood should be on your weekly shopping list for the various benefits it offers, particularly for your cardiovascular health. Certain foods should be avoided for the benefit of your heart. This includes deep-fried foods, energy drinks, and fatty bacon and cured meats, to name just a few. However, there are some foods you might want to consider eating more of for the sake of your heart health.
One of those foods can be purchased in tins for just 60p in UK supermarkets. According to the British Heart Foundation, oily fish like sardines should be eaten around twice a week to promote heart health. Cornish Sardines calls this fish product a ‘superfood’ because of its nutritional benefits. “It’s recommended that we should all be eating at least two portions of fish a week, including at least one of oily fish,” the British Heart Foundation advises.
“Oily fish tend to naturally have coloured or darker flesh (ignore the colour of the skin) – think salmon, trout, pilchards or sardines,” it adds.
While some of these fish, such as salmon, can be rather expensive, sardines are found in tins and are often sold for under £1. At the UK’s cheapest supermarket, Aldi, you will get a tin of sardines for just 59p, making it an affordable way to get a type of omega-3 that you can’t get from other foods, which the British Heart Foundation says “may help to keep your heart healthy”.
At Tesco and Morrisons, tinned sardines can be purchased for just 60p.
“Whether oily or white, fish is a great source of protein and contains a range of vitamins and minerals,” the British Heart Foundation adds.
“Eating more fish can also help you to cut down on red and processed meat. The traditional Mediterranean-style diet, which is associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases, includes plenty of fish along with beans and lentils as sources of protein.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are four key benefits of eating sardines. They are good for muscle building and tissue repair thanks to the protein; they promote heart health, can help improve brain health, and have high amounts of calcium, which benefits bone health.
