Witney Carson has stepped away from helping Robert Irwin navigate his dating life after briefly becoming his self-appointed wingwoman.
The professional dancer discussed the unusual role during an interview. Carson said the responsibility became overwhelming and took her focus away from her work with Irwin during Dancing With the Stars Season 34.
Witney Carson says she’s ‘not a matchmaker’ after trying to help Robert Irwin find romance
Carson explained on Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea that she initially tried to help Irwin after he revealed that he was single during the competition. The 22-year-old subsequently received messages from women interested in dating him.
“I have completely dropped that because it was so overwhelming for me,” Carson said.
She also looked back on the short-lived matchmaking role, saying, “I did that for a minute,” before explaining that she had “resigned from that job.”
Carson said she eventually realized that matchmaking was not something she wanted to continue. “I was like, ‘I’m not a matchmaker. This is not for me.’ It was too stressful,” she said.
Irwin had previously addressed the attention surrounding his single status. “First of all, it just means so, so much,” he said. “But, yeah, I’m on the lookout and it’ll happen when it happens … keep it coming!”
Irwin’s sister, Bindi Irwin, also became involved in helping him. Carson later said Bindi decided to step away from the effort.
“Bindi is taking a backseat. She’s like, ‘I can’t deal with it anymore. It’s up to you now,’” Carson recalled.
Carson and Irwin also made the situation part of an Instagram video. The post showed Carson checking Irwin’s direct messages and carried the caption, “Witney taking the wingman job very seriously,” along with the words, “Coming in hot to check Robert’s DMs.”
Carson eventually returned her attention to their Dancing With the Stars partnership. “I was like, ‘We’re trying to win here. We’re not trying to date,’” she said.
The pair won the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy during Season 34. The victory gave Carson her second Dancing With the Stars championship, while Irwin became the second member of his family to win the competition after Bindi Irwin’s Season 21 victory.
Carson and Irwin later reunited for Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro. They performed together and co-hosted the finale, extending their professional partnership beyond Season 34.
