18 Years Later, Netflix Officially Announces Return of One of the Greatest Sitcoms Ever

Nostalgia has become a valuable currency in modern streaming, and Netflix is one of the juggernauts that frequently trades with it. Over the last few years, the platform has perfected the unexpected resurrection, breathing new life into long-dormant franchises and giving beloved characters one final spin around the block. While audiences have grown accustomed to Hollywood reboots and revivals of major properties, the streaming giant has just dropped a bombshell that targets a deeply cherished corner of pop culture history.

Four legendary misfits, whose catastrophic awkwardness defined an entire generation, are officially dusting off their collective baggage and firing up their infamous vehicle for a surprise third act. Netflix has confirmed the return of one of the greatest sitcoms of all time with a new announcement teaser, revealing that The Inbetweeners is expanding with a third feature-length film, aptly titled The Inbetweeners 3. The video (shared below) shows all the original core cast members – Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, and Joe Thomas – squeezing back into Simon’s battered yellow Fiat Cinquecento, ready to ride again.

Not only are they ready to ride again, they’re already back in the driver’s seat as the movie has officially entered production. Netflix confirmed that cameras have already started rolling in the UK as of today (Aug. 7), marking the first time that the four leads have reprised their roles as Will, Jay, Neil, and Simon to share the screen since their second feature film, The Inbetweeners 2, which was released in 2014. Original creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris have also returned to write and direct, crafting more agonizingly awkward adventures for the iconic quartet. The duo shared a statement alongside the announcement, saying:

“It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.”

With The Inbetweeners 3 now fully underway, Netflix has promised to deliver a faithful continuation for long-time viewers who have spent over a decade waiting for this exact moment. When the British sitcom first debuted in 2008, it shattered the mold of glossy teen dramas, trading glamorous high school subplots for the crushing reality of terrible haircuts, social discomfort, and severe secondhand embarrassment. The series quickly established itself as a cultural phenomenon and expanded across three seasons before successfully leaping to the big screen. The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011 and its sequel, The Inbetweeners 2, in 2024, smashed box office records in the UK, solidifying the boys’ place in the comedy hall of fame.

For the past twelve years, The Inbetweeners franchise has remained fairly dormant, with the core cast frequently playing down reunion rumors to preserve the show’s pristine legacy. However, Netflix’s announcement reveals a surprise pivot, ending months of intense online speculation about a secret sequel movie. The project marks a bold new chapter that will no doubt reveal if the characters have matured at all in their late 30s – but given that we are dealing with Will, Jay, Neil, and Simon, any expectations of them navigating mortgages, marriages, or midlife crises with a shred of dignity is probably just wishful thinking.
