Although he’d worked in Hollywood for years, Taylor Sheridan became a household name after creating the neo-Western show Yellowstone, which ended in 2022. Since then, he’s built a TV empire, with four Yellowstone spin-off shows and a fifth on the way, not to mention standalone hits like Mayor of Kingstown, Landman, and Lioness.
Sheridan has a knack for attracting big-name acting talent, with actors like Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Kurt Russell, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Helen Mirren all appearing on his shows. Speaking to Variety, Chris Rock revealed that he wants in. “Hey, if Taylor Sheridan’s got a job for me, I will take that job,” Rock said. “I could be the Black guy on Yellowstone, no problem.”
Although best known for his comedy work, Chris Rock has appeared in many different kinds of movies over the years. He played crime lord Loy Cannon in the fourth season of Fargo, which somewhat recalls Sylvester Stallone’s role as capo Dwight Manfredi in Sheridan’s show Tulsa King.
That said, Rock has his own ideas about what kind of Taylor Sheridan he could work on: “I could just be the Black guy that owns some land and has like, white slaves,” he said. “Taylor Sheridan, let’s do the white slavery show! I’m the guy!”
Sheridan’s shows don’t generally revolve around Black characters, although his one-season show Lawmen: Bass Reeves does turn the spotlight on the real-life Deputy U.S. Marshal, played by David Oyelowo (Selma). Also, Morgan Freeman plays U.S. Secretary of State Edwin Mullins in Lioness. Still, it’s hard to see Sheridan deciding to make a “white slavery show.”
But of course, Chris Rock was kidding. There’s probably another role he could play, and he does sound like an earnest fan of Sheridan’s work. “I love Taylor Sheridan, he makes the best s***. Nothing’s better than Hell or High Water,” Rock said, referring to the 2016 Western crime drama. “Nothing is better.”
The next Taylor Sheridan show to air a new season is Marshals, which follows youngest Dutton child Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) after the events of Yellowstone. The second season of Marshals premieres on Sunday, October 4, 2026, on CBS and Paramount+. It’s too late for Rock to appear on that, but Sheridan always has lots of projects in development, so there should be an opportunity sooner or later. While we wait for that collaboration to get underway, you can see Chris Rock in his new film Misty Green, which he also wrote and directed. That movie opens in theaters on October 9.
