Dutton Ranch had big shoes to fill after Yellowstone‘s series finale. The death of the flagship series’ main character left everyone wondering whether the spin-off could captivate audiences the same way. However, from the opening episode, Dutton Ranch showcased many of the narrative hallmarks that made Yellowstone such a hit.
Right out of the gate, viewers are presented with the harsh new reality Beth and Rip face on their new Texas ranch, which includes a manic villain, Rob-Will, who is shown partaking in cocaine and shooting a man in the head as the series starts.
This dramatic tension increases when it’s revealed that Rob-Will is Beulah Jackson’s son and is set to inherit his own family ranch. Ultimately, this complicates matters further for Beth and Rip, as they form an alliance with Beulah right before the show drops this bombshell. Still, the minds behind Dutton Ranch have proven that most of its main characters are never safe, and Rob-Will’s fate is a prime example.
Rob-Will’s Death Sets Off A Chain Reaction

The setup for Dutton Ranch’s primary conflict seemed all but sealed towards the end of its first season. When Beulah named Rob-Will the next owner and operator of her family ranch, it effectively shut down a lucrative dining partnership, and a tense second meeting between Rip and the prodigal son set the stage for a struggle between the two in upcoming episodes.
However, all of that is upended by a new threat when Joaquin, under the orders of cartel boss Mariano Reyes, executes his own adopted brother. As the brains behind the Jackson ranch, Joaquin’s implied leadership over his family’s business presents a new nightmare for Beth and Rip to deal with.
When Rob-Will is introduced, he’s depicted as someone who flies off the handle easily. Joaquin, on the other hand, is extremely confident and calculating. On merit alone, he’s the logical choice to inherit the operational proceedings of his mother’s ranch.

In season 2, we can expect to see the aftermath of Rob-Will’s death and the impact on those closest to him. Oreana will be navigating her new pregnancy with Beth and Rip’s adopted son, Carter, along with the death of her father and Beulah’s health scare.
Rob-Will’s death also has terrifying implications for Beth and Rip, who have caught wind of the Jackson Ranch’s illicit activities. What’s more, with little cattle to show for themselves due to a widespread infection that culminated in a tragic mass livestock death scene, they may have no choice but to continue to work with Joaquin and Beulah.
Beth and Rip Would’ve Been Better Off Dealing With Rob-Will

In nearly every scene he appears in, Rob-Will is willing to throw down, and he’s not afraid to make enemies; he makes this abundantly clear in the show’s opener and when he accosts Rip in a parking lot. Furthermore, he demonstrates his capacity for cold-blooded murder when he convinces his friend Chet Davis to try to execute Joaquin.
However, Rob-Will’s failures don’t portray him as a brash enemy the Dutton Ranch veterans can’t handle. On the other hand, Joaquin, with his cartel connections, is a new type of problem. Beth even mentions that Joaquin reminds her of someone from her past, a likely reference to Jamie. Yellowstone fans know all about Jamie’s penchant for self-serving manipulation and quest for personal power, so much so that it culminates in his father’s death.
Now, she has a new Jamie to worry about, but this one has a much scarier force backing him than anyone in Yellowstone ever had.
It’s not difficult to imagine Beth and Rip’s paths will cross with the cartel at some point. The end of Dutton Ranch season 1 shows Rip discovering the Jackson Ranch’s connections to drug trafficking. Additionally, Joaquin’s distrust of Beth and Rip teases further conflict. With Rob-Will dead and Beulah’s health in jeopardy, paired with her constant admissions of wanting to be done overseeing day-to-day operations of the Jackson Ranch, it certainly looks like Joaquin will be the one calling the shots. More specifically, he’ll be calling the shots that the cartel he’s working with wants him to call.
The cherry on top is that Joaquin’s father is the cartel boss himself, so viewers can gear up to see if the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb when Dutton Ranch returns for season 2.
