Two years after it famously flopped in theaters, Henry Cavill’s World War II action thriller is finally finding redemption after landing on a new streaming home. Henry Cavill and Guy Ritchie’s team-ups haven’t exactly been successful. Considering Cavill is the hot favorite to play James Bond, and Guy Ritchie created two of the best crime thrillers of all time, you’d think they’d be a match made in heaven. However, their first pairing, 2015’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E, underperformed in theatres, grossing $110 million against a $75 million budget. In 2024, Cavill and Ritchie were re-united for an action-packed thriller based on a true story. It might have bombed even harder at the box office, but it’s now one of the biggest movies on streaming.
With a killer cast that includes Alan Ritchson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Eiza Gonzalez, Til Schweiger, Alex Pettyfer, and Henry Golding (alongside Henry Cavill, of course), The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is now back on streaming. The film was recently added to Netflix, and it’s already taking over. The movie has only been available on Netflix for a day, but it is already in the US top 10. At the time of writing, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is the third most watched movie on Netflix. The Seemingly Perfect Family currently holds the top spot, with Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again? in second. It’s been a good week for Guy Ritchie, as the new season of The Gentlemen is in Netflix’s TV top 10, and MobLand‘s new season is one of the biggest shows on Paramount+ right now.
‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ Is a Guys Being Guys Action Flick
On the scale of war movies, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is closer to Michael Bay’s 13 Hours than it is Saving Private Ryan or Hacksaw Ridge. It’s an unapolagetically macho movie, led by some of Hollywood’s biggest names. The film follows Cavill’s Gus March-Phillips, who forms a maverick black ops team under direct orders from Winston Churchill himself. With a unique consortium of squad mates, the team is tasked with destroying a Nazi U-boat supply station, which would allow the US to join the war efforts.
It’s not a life-changing movie. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare holds a 68% Rotten Tomatoes rating. MovieWeb’s own review (written by a certain someone), gave the film a 2/5, praising the action, but calling out the undercooked script and forgettable characters (which is the ultimate sin when the film is based on a true story). Although, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare certainly has its fan base — if its newfound Netflix success didn’t give that away. The movie holds a tremendous 91% Rotten Tomatoes user score.
Henry Cavill and Guy Ritchie’s Most Recent Movie Was Even Worse
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is the second film in an unofficial an disconencted trilogy between the Cavill and Ritchie. The most recent movie dropped earlier this year, and was a box office disaster. In the Grey, which also starred Jake Gyllenhaal, was a modern day action thriller about a suave covert team going behind enemy lines (sound familiar?). The film was torn apart by critics, holding a measly 52% Rotten Tomatoes score. Barely anyone went to see the film in theaters, as it earned just $27 million worldwide, against a budget of $59 million.
