Vice President JD Vance has a surprising favorite when it comes to TV: Emily in Paris. Vance recently defended his love for the Netflix series, calling it “genius” and even going as far as saying it is “the Shakespeare of our time.” According to him, the show is doing much more than serving up romance, wine and pretty Paris views.
JD Vance says ‘Emily in Paris’ is more than a glossy romantic comedy
Vance shared his thoughts after a “buddy” criticized the “masterwork of American television called Emily in Paris” in a TikTok posted on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Rather than agree, Vance offered his own “meta-analysis” of the show and explained why he thinks there is more to it than meets the eye.
At first glance, Vance said, the show is simply about “this sort of bubbly girl who goes to Paris and has a cool job and has great experiences and drinks fine wine and does all the things you would do in Paris.” But according to him, that is only the surface. “It is a massive cultural criticism of millennial decision making,” he said.
Vance also has strong feelings about Emily’s love life. Referring to Lily Collins’ Emily and Lucas Bravo’s Gabriel, he said, “She goes to Paris and it’s obvious to everybody watching the show that she should end up with the French chef.” He added, “She should marry this guy. They should start a family whether in Paris or America. They should build a life together.”
However, the characters keep making what Vance described as a “series of absurd, sometimes hilarious” mistakes that prevent them from being together. He argued that those choices are part of what makes the series interesting commentary on his generation.
Finally, Vance gave the show an especially big compliment: “You gotta watch Emily in Paris. At the risk of overstating it, it is the Shakespeare of our time.”
This is not the first time Vance has praised the series. During The Joe Rogan Experience in October 2024, he initially called it “some stupid show” before quickly correcting himself: “Sorry, I don’t mean to call that a stupid show, I actually think Emily in Paris is a masterpiece,” he said.
