The reaction within the Royal Family reportedly differs between King Charles and Prince William. Kinsey Schofield, host of Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered, told Fox News Digital that she had heard about “frustration and anger” from both households, but for different reasons. She said Charles may see the memoir as another attack on his character, years after Diana’s death.
Spencer’s memoir partly focuses on the decision to have William and Harry walk behind Diana’s coffin during her 1997 funeral procession. William was 15 at the time, while Harry was 12. Spencer claims he argued with Charles about the funeral plans.
He also alleges that Charles became angry during their conversation. One of the most controversial claims involves Charles’ alleged reaction after Diana died in a Paris car crash at 36. Spencer wrote that Charles sounded “giddily elated — like a lottery winner.” He later claimed that the then-Prince of Wales told him, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital that William does not have a close relationship with Spencer and claimed sources had described the Prince as “absolutely furious.” Fordwich also praised William for remaining publicly silent.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard said Buckingham Palace appeared concerned about the controversy but was not in a panic. She said the Royal Family was trying to stay united while continuing with their official duties. “The strategy is clear: let the book have a few weeks of noisy publicity and just plow on with the job,” Chard said.
She added, “Sources say King Charles is saddened, yet angry, and sort of feels like a lamb to the slaughter facing never-ending character assassination. For William, the pain cuts slightly deeper. It’s trauma stirred anew. Palace aides say his focus is on public work and protecting the family.”
