According to a report by RadarOnline.com, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has shared a striking claim about King Charles.
In his latest memoir, the 9th Earl Spencer looks back on his father John Spencer’s funeral in April 1992. He wrote, “Diana told me that her husband would like to go back to Althorp after my father’s funeral, rather than attend the cremation. She asked me to keep him company till she returned.”
The newly titled Earl was “happy to do this” for his brother-in-law. However, he soon found himself in an “awkward” situation with the reigning monarch.
Spencer recalled, “We found ourselves standing rather awkwardly in Althorp’s oak-paneled Tapestry Sitting Room, talking about the service. I shared that I had found it so moving to see my father’s coffin being borne into the church by his six longest-serving male members of staff that I had caught my breath and started to cry.”
His older sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, noticed his distress and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder in silent support. The then-Prince of Wales, however, reacted in a completely different way.
Charles Spencer recounted in his memoir, “Then, as we stood opposite one another, Prince Charles suddenly said: ‘You’re so lucky!’” Unsure he had heard correctly, Princess Diana’s brother asked Charles to repeat himself, stunned by the insensitive comment.
The royal heir reportedly responded, “You’re just so lucky – you know, inheriting when you’re so young!”
In response to King Charles’ comment, the Althorp estate owner wrote in his book that he would have traded his entire inheritance for more time with his father. Spencer added that he found it cruel to view such a loss as fortunate.
