Moana is sailing from theaters to home video, as Disney has officially set the film’s digital and physical media release. Moana, which opened in theaters on Jul. 10, 2026, is a live-action remake of the beloved Walt Disney animated film of the same name. Dwayne Johnson reprised his role as Maui, with star Catherine Laga’aia stepping into the title role of Moana.
Moana will release digitally on platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango on September 8, Variety reports. This marks 61 days, or a little over two months, since Moana opened in theaters. The movie will then be released on physical media formats such as 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 6. Bonus material for the digital and physical media release includes a sing-along version of the film and a feature that reunites Lin-Manuel Miranda with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi to discuss reworking the original film’s songs as well as crafting the newest song, “Along the Way.” Other behind-the-scenes features include ones exploring Lagaʻaia’s casting, the construction of Motunui, Tiana Nonosina Liufau’s choreography, and Liz McGregor’s costumes.
Even though Moana is among the ten highest-grossing movies of the 2026 summer movie season, it is also one of the years biggest disappointments. After a disappointing $43 million opening weekend, Moana has grossed $126 million domestically and $315 million worldwide against a $250 million budget. Moana was also poorly received by critics, with a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite the live-action Moana being a box office disappointment, the animated films in the franchise are doing well. The 2016 animated Moana remains the most-watched movie on Disney+, and that statistic may have driven Disney to move forward with a live-action remake. Moana 2, which opened in November 2024, grossed $1.059 billion worldwide. Walt Disney Animation is developing Moana 3.
With Moana‘s digital and physical media dates set, it is only a matter of time until the movie arrives on Disney+. The Mandalorian and Grogu debut on Disney+ on September 2, and Toy Story 5 is set to debut on September 23, so Moana should not be that far behind. With Disney traditionally waiting at least 90 days (three months) from when a film opens in theaters to when it debuts on Disney+, Moana seems set for an October Disney+ release. Even if audiences were skeptical about seeing the live-action Moana in theaters, it could find a new audience on streaming.
