Netflix is finding a new niche, and it is serving the mega-popular streamer well. Following the massive success of KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix is leaning into its animated offerings, and you won’t find many complaints among viewers. We may have “Golden” stuck in our heads for the next two years, but there’s no denying the supreme watchability of the streamer’s premiere animated releases.
Another flick is set to join Netflix’s slate of original animated favorites, and it’s a near-guaranteed hit for fans of Disney’s Descendants. A teaser for the upcoming film was released to YouTube on Sept. 17, and it promises an intriguing twist on the classic Cinderella fairytale we all know and love. Steps ditches the classic princess appeal for an edgier, more unique angle into the story. It follows Lilith, one of Cinderella’s so-called “evil” stepsisters, as she attempts to flip the script on the time-honored, all-too-familiar happily ever after.
The synopsis reads:
Blamed for magical mischief at the Royal Ball, stepsister Lilith turns her sister into a frog. She must work with Cinderella and a troll to save the kingdom and prove villains deserve happy endings too.
The premise is already intriguing, but the lineup of talent attached to the film is sure to convince even the most skeptical of viewers. Steps stars Ali Wong in the title role, alongside persistent fan-favorites Amanda Seyfried, Stephanie Hsu, Nikki Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, and Young Mazino. Even Peter Dinklage and Bette Midler will make appearances, rounding out an already stellar cast.
The talent doesn’t end on the cast list, either. Steps is dually-directed by Alyce Tzue, who brought us Little Emma, and John Ripa, the director behind Raya and the Last Dragon. It’s produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing. To top it off, Steps comes from the studio that brought us KPop Demon Hunters. You simply can’t beat a lineup like this one.
Disney has already dipped its toes into the villainous perspective with hits like Descendants and Cruella, but this is a new direction for Netflix. With gorgeous animation, an incredibly talented cast, and a fun and unique story direction, it seems Steps has all the ingredients required to become a streaming hit. We’ll see if it has what it takes to join the ranks of Netflix favorites when it hits the streamer on Nov. 20.
