The Avalanches Set 2027 Tour of Australia

The Avalanches will rumble down under in early 2027 for a live tour that includes a date at the Sydney Opera House Forecourt.

Led by Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and Andy Szekeres, the electronic music pioneers will play six concerts across Australia next February and March.

Presented by Takumi, the jaunt gets underway with two shows at Perth Festival, then heads east to Adelaide’s Hindley St Music Hall; the group’s hometown, Melbourne, for Live At The Gardens; On The Banks in Brisbane, and wraps up at the iconic Sydney Opera House.

“The chaotic virtuosity and charm of The Avalanches have brought unmatched joy to ears and feet around the world for more than 25 years. After hosting them at Vivid LIVE in the Studio in 2011 and on the Northern Broadwalk in 2017, it’s a thrill to finally hand them the keys to the Sydney Opera House Forecourt,” remarks Sydney Opera House head of contemporary music Ben Marshall.

“From Since I Left You to their forthcoming No Bad Memories, The Avalanches have continually reconstructed the DNA of electronic music with a generous cast of brilliantly curated, visionary guests. Experiencing their kaleidoscopic, deeply human storytelling on the grandest stage our city can offer will be an extraordinary summer moment – and a hell of a lot of fun.”

Joining The Avalanches on those final east coast shows (Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney) is HAAi, the Australia-born, London-based electronic music artist, whose new 10-track collection, DIGITiSE, drops Oct. 9 via Mute Records.

The Avalanches are gearing up for the release of their own, fourth studio album, No Bad Memories (via Modular Recordings), due out Oct. 16.

With their debut 2000 album Since I Left You, The Avalanches created an instant classic.

Its genius, slivers of hundreds of songs from the likes of Françoise Hardy, Sérgio Mendes, Raekwon, Wayne and Shuster, and even Madonna, painstakingly, surgically woven into a musical patchwork.

The result, which included the title track and “Frontier Psychiatrist,” was a collection that was both timeless, and immediate. Or, as a statement from the band’s reps suggests, “a global footprint for collaborative sampology in the 21st century.”

Its followup was 16 years in the making. Many thought it would never see the light of day. When it did arrive, Wildflower immediately went to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. A third album travelled at comparative warp-speed in 2020, We Will Always Love You, and later scooped the coveted Australian Music Prize, for the best album of the year.

The new project, Chater explains, began with “rhythmic experiments using the sonic leftovers and hallmarks of the technologies we grew up with,” with recordings of hard drives, computer hardware and forgotten technologies becoming part of the album’s sonic palette.

No Bad Memories includes the previously released cuts “Together” with Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss; “Every Single Weekend” with Jamie xx, “Blue Shadows” with Karen O, “Can’t Get Over Losing You” with Portraits of Tracy, and most recently “Far Away” with John Glacier and Khadija Al Hanafi.

The general onsale for the 2027 Australia tour starts Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 9am local time. Click here for tickets and information. The artist pre-sale opens earlier.

Before heading home, The Avalanches will complete a run of dates across Continental Europe and the United Kingdom, including a sold-out show Nov. 27 at The Roundhouse in London.
