11 years after it was first released, Tom Hardy’s intense and nearly three-hour-long action epic is one of the biggest movies in the world on streaming. It might not be his go-to genre, but Tom Hardy is still a bona fide action star. Mad Max: Fury Road put him on the map in the genre, but Netflix’s Havoc, the Venom trilogy, Christopher Nolan’s Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, and Warrior are all fantastic action flicks (and some are even genuinely good movies… but not Venom). In 2015, the same year as Fury Road, Hardy released another action movie. As well as being one of his most critically acclaimed, it’s also making a major comeback on streaming.
Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, The Revenant is currently one of the biggest movies on streaming. The Revenant is mostly known as an adaptation of Michael Punke’s 2002 novel of the same name. But that’s not the whole truth. The movie takes parts from the book, but it is also a remake of the 1971 movie Man in the Wilderness. Leonardo DiCaprio leads as Hugh Glass, a fur trapper who is left for dead by his fellow frontiersmen and seeks revenge in the American Wilderness. It’s a brutal and raw tale of revenge, with Hardy playing John Fitzgerald, one of the people who left Glass for dead.
The Revenant was added to HBO Max on Sept 1, and it has quickly shot up the global streaming charts. In fact, it is currently one of the biggest movies in the world on streaming. At the time of writing, The Revenant is the sixth most popular film on HBO Max globally. Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 is #1, with the new revenge thriller Bull in second, and Despicable Me 2 (for some reason) in third.
‘The Revenant’ Is an Oscar-Winning Action Hit
The Revenant isn’t just an acclaimed action movie; it’s an Oscar-winning action movie. Inarritu is one of the best directors working today, and he assembled a fantastic A-list cast for the movie. Alongside DiCaprio and Hardy, The Revenant also stars Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson, Lukas Haas, and Paul Anderson.
The film holds a surprisingly okay 78% Rotten Tomatoes score. But its audience rating is much higher, at 84%, with a similarly great 8.0 IMDb rating. But that’s nothing compared to the three Oscars the film won. As well as a Best Picture nomination, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Oscar for playing Hugh Glass, while Inarritu won Best Director, and Emmanuel Lubezki earned Best Cinematography.
‘Tom Hardy’ is Committed to the Action Genre With His New TV Series
Tom Hardy has starred in some big action movies. But when he teamed up with Guy Ritchie for the 2025 series MobLand, the action genre didn’t know what hit it. Season 1 was a roaring success, and Season 2, which releases on Sept 18 on Paramount+, looks to be even bigger and more action-heavy than ever. Paramount also has a lot of faith in the show, as MobLand was recently renewed for a pre-emptive third season.
