Why Dr. Neal McNamara From Lioness Looks So Familiar

If you’ve been watching the all-new third season of “Lioness,” which premiered on Paramount+ on August 2, you may have caught yourself eyeing Joe McNamara’s husband — and wondering why his mug looks so familiar.

From “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, “Lioness” stars Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Kelly as players in a dangerous world of counterterrorism covert ops. One character far from the explosive drama is Dr. Neal McNamara, played by Dave Annable. Neal is a pediatric surgeon tasked with holding down the fort while Joe (Saldaña) is away on her perilous missions.

This isn’t Annable’s first appearance in a Sheridan TV show, either. Those struggling to place his face likely remember him from Sheridan’s biggest series of all: “Yellowstone.” Annable played perhaps one of the most pivotal characters in that series — Lee Dutton, the eldest son of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who meets a tragic end in the show’s pilot episode. Lee’s death serves as the crucial catalyst that sets the story in motion. Before saddling up in Montana, Annable had scored his major breakout as Justin Walker, the troubled youngest sibling on ABC’s hit family drama “Brothers & Sisters.” Annable appeared in 110 episodes across all five seasons between 2006 and 2011, making it his biggest recurring role to date.

Is Dave Annable the sexiest man alive?

Some of Dave Annable’s other notable roles include Dr. Adam McAndrew in Fox’s medical drama “Red Band Society” and Dan Miller in The CW’s “Walker” reboot. Most recently, he appeared in six episodes of Netflix’s crime drama series “The Waterfront,” in which he played Wes Larsen.

Outside of his TV resume, you may also have seen Annable in People magazine. He’s caught that outlet’s eye on several occasions, appearing in a good handful of their “Sexiest Man Alive” lists between 2007 and 2024 — an honor he embraces with plenty of humor. “Finally something to talk about!” Annable joked to his hometown radio station WRRV. “I’m going to have some shirts made. I’ll send some to you guys.” He even playfully called out 2024’s top winner: “No disrespect to John Krasinski, but I let everybody know that I’m a three-timer. It wasn’t just an accident.”

During the same interview, the actor also discussed “Lioness,” shedding some more light on how the show explores the relationship dynamic between a CIA operative and a doctor. “I always found it interesting — what’s it like when a spy comes home? How much can you talk about, and how much can you not talk about?” Annable told WRRV. “It’s really just a great show. It’s intense and has that ‘Sicario’-esque tone that fans of Taylor Sheridan’s work will love.” Working with such an elite ensemble of actors is not something he takes for granted, either. “We’re sitting pretty right now,” he noted. “It’s an honor to work alongside talents like Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Kelly.”
