15 Biggest Questions After ‘Street Fighter’s Twist Ending, Explained

Warning: Street Fighter (2026) spoilers below!

The latest adaptation of Street Fighter is finally here, with trailers hyping the video game aesthetics and eclectic roster of fighters. The action-packed movie is based on the Street Fighter video game franchise, which began in 1987 and has continued to grow since. As with any long-running franchise, plenty of lore has built up around its characters, and the new movie draws heavily on the game’s history.

Street Fighter mainly focuses on Ryu and Ken, estranged friends who trained in martial arts together under master Gouken. After Ryu taps into the dark side of his power to win the World Warrior Tournament, it hinders his ability to fight without losing control. Bison is an evil dictator who wants to harness Ryu’s power for himself, so he creates a new tournament to lure the champion out of seclusion. Chun-Li helps Bison gather the fighters, but is secretly working undercover to stop the dictator who killed her father. The movie delivers plenty of action, often cutting between characters and quickly moving through plot points with minor nods to important lore. Thankfully, I have answers to your burning Street Fighter questions.

Why Is ‘Street Fighter’ Set in 1993

Street Fighter doesn’t inherently need to be set in 1993, but the movie embraces the era as a nod to the game’s history and to amplify its colorful aesthetics. Super Street Fighter II was released in 1993, marking a major turning point for the fighting-game franchise. The game dominated arcades and was a huge hit for home consoles. Many gamers first encountered the franchise and beloved characters like Cammy through Super Street Fighter II.

How Did Chun-Li Find Ryu When Nobody Else Could

The movie emphasizes that no one has been able to find Ryu for six years. Ken, Dan, and Bison all note that nobody seems to know his whereabouts, yet Chun-Li finds him immediately. Bison tasked her with finding Ryu for his tournament, as he wants to steal Ryu’s power. She finds him easily and invites him to the tournament, but the story gives little background on how she did it.

Audiences learn that Chun-Li is working undercover with Interpol to bring down Bison. While it isn’t spelled out, viewers are left to assume she utilized her Interpol connections to find him, or that the organization was already keeping tabs on him. She also didn’t bring Ryu directly to Bison, which seemed like a simpler solution than staging an entire tournament, but it didn’t directly serve her personal revenge mission.

What Is the Difference Between Hado Power and Psycho Power

When Bison tries to harness people’s power, audiences see the gauges on his machines, which measure Hado Power and Psycho Power. Characters like Ken and Ryu can also harness similar energy to create their own powerful attacks, like the Hadouken fireball. The Street Fighter games have several forms of energy that characters utilize for their unique fighting styles and power. These include Hado, Satsui no Hado, Yoga, and Psycho, among others. Psycho energy draws on negative emotions like fear and rage, while Hado draws on life force and spiritual energy. The movie doesn’t delve too deep into it, but characters like Dhalsim utilize Yoga energy, and Blanka taps into elemental power.

Why Was Don Sauvage Initially Imprisoned

Don Sauvage in Street Fighter 2026 Paramount

When you first meet Don Sauvage, he’s been locked away in a prison cell for some time. How long is unclear, but he’s afraid of further torture and is ecstatic at the prospect of being let out. He’s an eccentric ring announcer who also hosts a fighting-focused sports show called Combat News. It’s hinted that he said things that didn’t sit well with Bison, which led to his imprisonment. He’s only allowed out on the condition that he agrees to say whatever Bison wants, setting the stage for the new World Warrior Tournament.

Who Is Akuma and Why Does He Want To Fight Ryu

Roman Reigns as Akuma in Street Fighter Paramount Pictures

When Ryu taps into his dark Satsui no Hado, or Surge of Murderous Intent, energy in the first World Warrior Tournament, Akuma senses a worthy opponent. The film presents Akuma almost as a godlike character, but audiences learn he’s Gouken’s brother. They both trained under the same master, whom Akuma eventually killed after embracing dark energy. From then on, he wandered the Earth in search of the strongest opponents to fight. It may seem like a simplistic explanation, but he really just wanted to fight someone he saw as extremely powerful.

Why Does Bison Want Ryu’s Power, and How Does His Machine Extract It

Bison attended the first World Warrior Tournament when Evil Ryu first emerged. As any evil dictator would, he became obsessed with wielding the immense power he saw. Of course, rather than learn the fighting discipline, he had a crude machine built that can harvest people’s various forms of energy, be it Hado, Psycho, or Yoga. The machine works, as Bison has harnessed Psycho power. However, that’s not enough, as the dictator wants the immense power Ryu unknowingly wields. The machine’s exact workings aren’t explicitly explained, but it is a unique creation for the new movie.

Where Did Blanka Come From

Jason Momoa Street Fighter Paramount Pictures

When Blanka is introduced, he’s presented as a caged monster. A flashback shows Bison discovering Blanka as a child in the jungle and noting that his electric powers come from eels. The movie also has Blanka tell Ryu that his name is Jimmy. This is all part of Blanka’s origin story, but it glosses over some important details.

Blanka was a young American boy who survived a plane crash in the Amazon jungle. He grew up feral, and his skin turned green from his unique diet of jungle plants. His electrical powers come from eels, and his mother plays a big role in his arc. Bison lures Blanka out by promising to tell him where his mother is. While this feels like a lie on Bison’s part, Blanka’s mother is alive in the games, and he’s eventually reunited with her. Bison may have been telling the truth, but that remains to be seen.

Why Were the Flashbacks Animated

Street Fighter makes the distinct choice to present several flashbacks as animated sequences. The film opens with an animated scene of the first World Warrior Tournament fight between Ryu and Sagat, with quick flashes between live-action and animated moments throughout. Even the mid-credits scene follows this style. Some might dismiss it as a stylistic choice, but it’s more of a nod to the franchise’s history of animated films, like Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994).

Who Is Joe

Joe in street fighter 2026 Paramount

Throughout the tournament, the film references Joe as one of the selected fighters. Unlike the other participants, you don’t see much of Joe. He remains a background character, yet he still feels like he was meant to be prominent. Joe has a cocky moment when he faces off against Akuma, who quickly kills him. Given his prominence in the background, he seems like an important game character. However, Joe is a unique reference to an unplayable, computer-controlled fighter in the first 1987 Street Fighter game.

Who Actually Won the World Warrior Tournament

The film takes place almost entirely in and around the World Warrior Tournament. Ironically, it also skips over much of the event, with most fights happening off-screen. The tournament ends with a whimper, as Ken forfeits when he skips out to save Ryu, giving Joe the win. His default victory is short-lived, as Akuma quickly kills him. Still, Joe technically won the tournament.
