Charles Spencer Had a Blunt View of Prince Harry & Prince William at Diana’s Funeral

Charles Spencer’s memoir of Princess Diana gives an unfiltered look at Prince William and Prince Harry at her funeral. This comes as rumors swirl that the Duke of Sussex is planning a documentary in honor of his late mother. The project is intended to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana‘s tragic death in August 1997.

Charles Spencer thought Prince Harry and Prince William walking behind Diana’s coffin was ‘absurd’

Charles Spencer felt that it was deeply “absurd” and heartbreaking to have Prince Harry and Prince William walk behind their mother’s coffin. It is among the multiple striking statements made by the Earl in his memoir, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.”

In a recent interview about his latest book, the 9th Earl Spencer said that his reaction stemmed from King Charles’ reported remark about Princess Diana, referred to as “those five words.” Speaking about his memoir on CNN’s “The Source with Kaitlan Collins,” Diana’s brother asserted, “He genuinely said that. I call it ‘those five words.’ And I told people close to me about it at the time. It was so shocking.”

The Earl further noted that the King’s alleged remark reportedly came after a disagreement over the funeral arrangements. The dispute was about whether Prince William and Prince Harry, then just 15 and 12, should be made to walk behind their mother’s coffin in public.

He shared, “I thought it was an absurd idea and really not right. And he [the King] saw things very differently. And we had a difference of opinion.” The Althorp owner added, “And we all know he has a temper. You may remember the scene where he loses his temper with a fountain pen when he’s signing a document when he became king.”

Weighing in, Charles Spencer further said, “It was probably one of those moments for him. But for me, as a grieving brother, it was very shocking.” However, his explosive assertions have prompted a rare rebuttal from Buckingham Palace, which stated, “fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory.”
